2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon: The Street Car the NHRA Wrote to Before It Was Revealed

The SRT Demon year: a one-model-year factory drag car planned and built as 3,000 US and 300 Canadian cars, alongside the first Hellcat Widebody and a sixteen-model range.

The most unusual piece of paper in the 2018 Challenger's file was written months before the public saw the car. In November 2016, NHRA vice president of technical operations Glen Gray sent Fiat Chrysler Automobiles a letter saying the car exceeded NHRA limits and "must be brought into compliance" with Section 4 of the rulebook. The issue was elapsed time. Under NHRA rules, a car running 9.99 seconds or quicker needs a certified roll cage, a window net, an aftermarket restraint system, a driveshaft loop and a master cut-off switch, and its driver needs a competition license and fire-resistant gear. Dodge turned the letter into an advertising line: "Officially Banned by the NHRA."1

Dodge introduced the car, the 2018 Challenger SRT Demon, at the 2017 New York Auto Show. It was a factory drag car built on a production line. Its supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI Demon V-8 was rated at 808 hp and 717 lb-ft on the standard calibration, and at 840 hp and 770 lb-ft with the Demon Crate powertrain controller on 100-plus-octane unleaded. An SRT Power Chiller liquid-to-air system cooled the charge, an Air-Grabber scoop of 45.2 square inches fed the engine, and the only transmission was the TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic. It had a TransBrake, which Dodge billed as a factory-production exclusive, a line lock for burnouts, and specially designed 315/40R18 drag radials.1,2,3

The numbers Dodge published were built to be quoted, and they need their conditions attached. The quarter-mile figure was NHRA-certified: the NHRA's own report says testing at Gainesville Raceway certified 9.650 seconds at 140 mph. Dodge claimed 0-60 mph in 2.3 seconds, 0-30 in 1.0 second and 1.8 g at launch, and said Guinness World Records had certified the Demon as the first production car to lift its front wheels at launch; the fact sheet put the lift at 2.92 feet. These are manufacturer runs on the 840-hp calibration and prepared surfaces, not measurements of a customer car on an ordinary road.1,2,3

On May 23, 2017, Dodge priced it at $84,995, including a $1,700 gas-guzzler tax and before $1,095 destination. Tim Kuniskis, head of passenger cars, addressed the premium directly: "Eighty-five thousand dollars is not just a number in a business case to Dodge." The car shipped with only a driver's seat. A front passenger seat, a rear seat in cloth or leather, and a trunk carpet kit were each a $1 option, and so was the Demon Crate, which Dodge valued at $6,140: Direct Connection parts, drag wheels, the calibration module and track tools. Owners also got a day at the Bob Bondurant School and a leather-bound Track Tech Manual with the car's own build sheet.2

The production figure came first as a promise. The same May 2017 release said production of the single-model-year Demon would begin that summer at Brampton, Ontario, "with 3,000 vehicles for the United States and 300 vehicles for Canada," and that deliveries would start in the fall. That is an announced allocation: a statement of what Dodge intended to build, made before the first customer car existed. It sets the ceiling Dodge advertised and gives the Canadian share as 300 of the planned 3,300, one car in eleven, but on its own it proves nothing about how many were finished.2

The completion came a year later and is a separate claim. On May 30, 2018, FCA announced that the last Demon had rolled off the line at Brampton, describing the car as "limited to one model year and 3,300 units." The corporate blog the next day said the last car completed "the run of 3,000 cars for the U.S. market and 300 for the Canadian market." The completed count matches the announced one, but both come from the same company, so the agreement is not an independent check, and no VIN ledger has been published. A figure of about 3,312 cars, from enthusiast VIN lookups, circulates on forums without any published data behind it and cannot replace Dodge's figure.4,5

The last car got a send-off of its own. After it left Brampton it was hand-painted Viper Red at an upfit center, a color no other 2018 Demon carried, and it was auctioned at Barrett-Jackson's Northeast sale at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut, in June 2018, paired with the last 2017 Dodge Viper. All of the hammer proceeds went to United Way. FCA counted the pair at a combined 1,485 horsepower, 840 from the Demon and 645 from the Viper, and called the Demon's engine the most powerful production V-8. The auction put the end of the Viper and the end of the Demon on one stage.4

The Demon was the loudest Challenger of 2018 but far from the only one. Dodge's fact sheet lists sixteen models, from the 305-hp SXT through the GT all-wheel-drive car, the 375-hp R/T and T/A family, the 485-hp 392 cars and the 707-hp SRT Hellcat. New for the year was the SRT Hellcat Widebody at $71,495 including gas-guzzler tax, 3.5 inches wider, on 20 by 11-inch Devil's Rim wheels with 305/35ZR20 Pirelli P Zero tires and electric power steering; Dodge claimed a 10.9-second quarter mile. Dodge's own documents disagree on its transmissions: the Widebody release describes a six-speed manual as well as the eight-speed automatic, while the fact sheet lists only the automatic, and the question remains open.3,6

The paint chart shows a car leaning on its history. The fact sheet names fifteen colors, including Go Mango, TorRed, Yellow Jacket and Plum Crazy, with B5 Blue, F8 Green and IndiGo Blue marked as new or late-availability colors, and six interiors, one of them Black with Demonic Red. No count by color, by interior or by model has been published for the year, and there is no production figure for the Hellcat Widebody. The only color with a known production is the one that was never on the chart: the single hand-painted Viper Red Demon.3,4

The showroom answered the extremes with volume. FCA reported 66,716 Challengers sold in the United States in calendar 2018 and called it a new record for the nameplate, beating the 66,377 it by then recorded for 2015. Those are sales of every Challenger in the calendar year, not model-year production, and they say nothing by themselves about Demons. What the year left behind was a template: a factory car designed around a drag strip, sold with a numbered limit, and certified at the track before it was delivered. Dodge returned to the Demon name for the 2023 Challenger SRT Demon 170.7,8,9

Coverage: Partial — researched sections are shown; missing ones are not yet sourced. Researched through 2026-09-23.

Every figure is labeled with how sure we are. Reported means a manufacturer, registry, or reference figure we cite but have not reconciled against factory records ourselves. Disputed means credible sources disagree and both are shown. Rows are separately scoped; don't add them together unless the note says they make up a total.
