Cautions for this scheme
- This layout differs from 1968 onward: the plant letter sits in position 3 and there is no car-line digit; the engine letter block identifies the line (1966 and 1967 keys).
- 1966 codes come from the factory Vehicle Identification Number Key printed in the 1966 Rambler Data Book (p. 194), which covers the American, Classic, Ambassador and Marlin lines. It replaces the Marlin Auto Club table as the 1966 authority; the club table is kept only as a second citation where it agrees.
- The 1966 key's plant box names only the Kenosha plant (K). B = Brampton is published for 1966 on the 1967 key's definition and the Marlin Auto Club's 1966 table, which is a secondary source; a 1966 VIN with B in position 3 should be read with that caveat.
- The 1966 and 1967 keys say the six-digit serial starts at 100,001 for each series; it is a production count, not a build date or a unique-per-plant number.
- A decode does not prove the car is original or correct. For 1966–1967 Rambler cars the build is also described by the body/trim plate; it is not decoded here.
