- A decode reads what Cadillac's shop manuals, parts catalog and data books say. It does not prove the car is original.
- The eight-character number has no division, plant or engine character: the letter is a sales code for series and body style, and the six-digit sequence is one division-wide count from 100001.
- The engine and transmission carry the number without the sales-code letter (1969 Shop Manual).
