No sourced production figure was found for 1982 Capris or any of its performance trims; this record notes that a Ford production report or the Mercury section of a Standard Catalog of American Cars would be needed to close that gap. The Black Magic edition continued for the year, per Wikipedia, again with no production count found for it specifically. No price is carried in this record: one drawn from J.D. Power's live valuation pages was removed across this project on 2026-09-24 because those pages can change without notice and cannot be independently checked, and no source this record can stand behind has yet been found to replace it.1

The 2.3 SOHC four, with a two-barrel carburetor, was standard across every trim. The 3.3-liter (200 cid) six, one-barrel, was optional on the L, GS, RS, and Black Magic but not the base Capri, and required the automatic. The 4.2-liter (255 cid) V8, two-barrel, was optional on the same four trims and likewise required the automatic. The 5.0-liter (302 cid) V8, also two-barrel, was optional on those same trims but paired only with the 4-speed overdrive manual, and the brochure describes it as "designed for increased performance," fitted with a high-performance camshaft and carburetor.

The 4-speed manual was standard with the 2.3, and a 4-speed overdrive manual was standard instead with the 5.0. A 5-speed overdrive manual was optional with the 2.3, and stood as the standard transmission with that engine in Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Hawaii, and California specifically. The 3-speed automatic was optional with the 2.3, required with either the 3.3 or 4.2, and not offered at all with the 5.0.

The TR Performance Package, bundling Michelin TRX 190/65R390 tires, forged metric aluminum wheels, and the Rally suspension, was optional on the Capri, L, GS, and RS but came standard on the Black Magic, which wore its own forged metric wheels in gold as standard equipment. The Radial Sport Suspension and a large hood scoop were both optional on the Capri, L, and GS, standard on the RS, and unavailable at all on the Black Magic; a tape stripe ran the other way, optional on the Capri and L, unavailable on the GS and RS, and standard on the Black Magic. Leather seat trim was optional on the L, GS, and RS but not offered on the Capri or Black Magic, while a leather-wrapped steering wheel was optional generally and standard on the RS. A Traction-Lok axle in 2.73, 3.08, or 3.45:1 ratios was optional across every trim, specialty Tu-Tone paint was optional on the Capri, L, and GS but not offered on the RS or Black Magic, and turbine wheel covers were standard on every trim except the Black Magic.

The Capri measured 179.1 in overall on a 100.4-inch wheelbase, 69.1 in wide and 51.4 in tall, with a 37.1-foot turning diameter, 30.3 cu ft of cargo volume with the rear seat folded, a 15.4-gallon fuel tank, and a base curb weight of 2,722 lb in the 49 states. No exterior color or interior trim listing for the year was found in an accessible documented source, so neither the paint nor the interiors section is populated in this record.

The numbers

1982 Mercury Capri (RS, 5.0 and special editions) — The Black Magic edition continued; no 1982 production figure was found.

Coverage: Partial — researched sections are shown; missing ones are not yet sourced. Researched through 2026-09-22.

Every figure is labeled with how sure we are. Reported means a manufacturer, registry, or reference figure we cite but have not reconciled against factory records ourselves. Disputed means credible sources disagree and both are shown. Rows are separately scoped; don't add them together unless the note says they make up a total.

Prices when new *

No price is shown here. One was, until 2026-09-24: a figure from J.D. Power's live valuation pages, pulled from every page on this site because those pages can change without our knowing and we have no way to check them independently. We haven't found a source we can stand behind to put in its place yet. A price for this car elsewhere that looks suspiciously exact may be quoting that same J.D. Power figure rather than confirming it — several sites we checked turned out to be doing exactly that, without saying so.
