Where to find it: Passenger cars, MPVs, trucks <= 4536 kg GVWR and low-speed vehicles: inside the passenger compartment, readable through the glazing in daylight by an observer outside the vehicle next to the left windshield pillar; characters at least 4 mm high (§ 565.13(f), § 565.23(f)). The VIN must be on a part not designed to be removed except for repair, or on a permanently affixed plate or label, not on the glazing (§ 565.13(e)).

Cautions for this scheme
- This pack decodes only what 49 CFR Part 565 fixes for every U.S. VIN: length, alphabet, check digit, model-year cycle, and the manufacturer identifier and plant codes listed here. Positions 4-8 are manufacturer-specific and are decoded by the manufacturer packs where a source supports them.
- A valid check digit means the 17 characters are self-consistent. It does not show that the VIN belongs to the car, or that the car is what the VIN says. Output is decoded, never authenticated.
- WMI meanings name the make and vehicle type. vPIC names today's legal entity (e.g. GENERAL MOTORS LLC, FCA US LLC), not the company that assigned the VIN at the time.
- Plant codes are manufacturer-specific and year-scoped; only plants that built this site's subjects are listed, for the model years a manufacturer guide was read.
- Mustang, Camaro and Corvette are handed to Mustang Car Facts, CamaroFacts and VetteFacts by the manufacturer packs, which can see the line code.
Where the sources disagree
- 49 CFR 565.15 Table V prints the decimal equivalent of 7/11 as 0.634; 7/11 = 0.636.
- The "Typical VIN" printed in Chrysler/FCA guides fails the Part 565 check digit.
- vPIC's Country field is inconsistent for GM WMIs.
