Cautions for this scheme
- Decoded by rule from the 1975–1976 Ford Car Shop Manual identification tables, which cover Ford, Lincoln and Mercury cars. A decode does not prove the car is what its VIN says.
- The engine letter records the engine the car was built with. It is not proof that the engine now in the car is original.
- The certification label's body, color, vinyl roof, trim, transmission, axle and DSO codes are not part of the VIN and are not decoded here.
- Only 1975 and 1976 are held. No factory Lincoln-Mercury table was read for 1974 or 1977–1979, so a 4, 7, 8 or 9 in position 1 is not offered to this pack (1977–1979 Mercury Zephyr, Cougar, Monarch, Marquis, Bobcat, Capri and Lincoln Versailles, Continental and Mark V codes are not held).
- The 1975 year digit rests on the manual's statement that the first number is the model year, read with its 1975 tables; the manual prints a 1976 example (6S63H100001) but no 1975 example.
- The Mercury Capri sold 1971–1977 was imported from Ford of Germany and does not appear in these tables; its identification number is not decoded here.
- Canadian Meteor (Rideau 500, Montcalm) codes are printed in the tables but are outside this site's US scope; they show as unknown codes. Canada-only Bobcat codes are published and labelled.
- The same VIN may also be offered to the Ford Division 1970s pack (which covers a lower unit-number range) and to the 1960s packs; the Lincoln-Mercury reading applies when the car is a Mercury or Lincoln.
