The SS name returns on the G-body Monte Carlo with a 305 V8: 4,714 SS coupes per the standard production table.
United States · researched through 2026-09-22
The SS name returned for 1983 on the G-body Monte Carlo with a 305-cu-in V8, and this record's own dek states that 4,714 SS coupes were built that year per the standard production table, out of 96,319 Monte Carlos overall. Wikipedia's own table, citing the Standard Catalog of American Cars 1976-1999, and MonteCarloSS.com's own FAQ give the identical 4,714 figure, though this record's own production note states plainly that the independence of those two lineages from one another is not established, since both may ultimately trace back to the same Standard Catalog source.1,2
All 1983-1986 SS coupes were built at a single plant in Arlington, Texas, per the MonteCarloSS.com FAQ, a plant detail this record carries as applying across the whole four-year span rather than 1983 specifically. Chevrolet's own January 1983 price schedule lists the Monte Carlo SS sport coupe, order code 1GZ37 Z65, at $10,249 MSRP, a roughly 20 percent premium over the plain V6 sport coupe's $8,552, with the dealer order guide listing exactly one engine and two exterior colors, Dark Blue Metallic and White, for the SS specifically.2
Two engine entries describe what appears to be the same 305 four-barrel V8 from two separate sources: the MonteCarloSS.com FAQ and a dealer card both give an unspecified "5.0L 4 Bbl. V8" at 175 hp and 230 lb-ft, while the GM information kit's own SS specification sheet instead documents the L69 5.0-liter four-barrel H.O. as the only engine listed for order code 1GZ37/Z65, at 175 hp but 235 lb-ft, with a Rochester Quadrajet carburetor and standard or California-emissions calibrations. A three-speed THM 350C automatic was the sole transmission offered, with no manual gearbox recorded anywhere in this record for the SS that year, and a standard 3.42:1 rear axle ratio documented across both the dealer card and the FAQ.2
The Z65 SS package itself is documented with an extensive equipment list: special instrumentation with a tachometer, sport suspension, a rear spoiler, special Rally wheels, sport mirrors, and P215/65R15 white-lettered radial tires, alongside a long list of separately optional convenience items from air conditioning and power windows to a six-way power driver seat and automatic speed control. This record's own paint section carries a caveat of its own: MonteCarloSS.com's SPID paint-code table lists five SS colors generation-wide, but this record states that year-by-year availability within that table could not be read reliably, so it is not asserted here beyond the two colors the 1983-specific dealer sources confirm.2
Specification detail from the factory information kit is extensive: a 108.1-inch wheelbase, 202.4-inch overall length, 3,400-lb curb weight, 56.4 percent front weight distribution, 9.5:1 compression, transmission ratios of 2.52/1.52/1.00, a 12.7:1 steering ratio, 21.9 mph per 1,000 rpm in top gear, a 0.375 drag coefficient, and an EPA rating of 18 city and 26 highway mpg. This record's performance section is empty for the year despite that specification depth, and no logged conflict is recorded for 1983, leaving the production-lineage independence question already noted above as this record's only flagged uncertainty for the year.

Every figure is labeled with how sure we are. Reported means a manufacturer, registry, or reference figure we cite but have not reconciled against factory records ourselves. Disputed means credible sources disagree and both are shown. Rows are separately scoped; don't add them together unless the note says they make up a total.
