This record's own dek describes 1984 as the first full SS year, with 24,050 SS coupes built out of 136,780 Monte Carlos overall, roughly seventeen and a half percent of that year's whole Monte Carlo output. Wikipedia's own table, citing the Standard Catalog of American Cars 1976-1999, and MonteCarloSS.com's own FAQ give the identical 24,050 figure, though this record's own production note states that the independence of those two lineages from one another is not established.1,2

All 1983-1986 SS coupes were built at a single Arlington, Texas plant, per the MonteCarloSS.com FAQ, a detail this record carries as applying across the whole four-year span rather than 1984 specifically. Chevrolet's own price schedule, published July 27, 1984, lists the Monte Carlo SS sport coupe, order code 1GZ37 Z65, at $10,800 MSRP for cars built from July 30, 1984, against $9,038 for the plain V6 sport coupe, roughly a 20 percent premium for the SS specifically.2

This record's own conflicts section logs a genuine torque dispute for the L69 305 HO: the MonteCarloSS.com FAQ gives 225 lb-ft at 3,200 rpm, while the 1984 MVMA specifications form instead prints 235 lb-ft at the same rpm, with a struck-through 319 N-m figure beside it and a handwritten annotation on the scanned page. This record's own treatment keeps both figures rather than picking one, stating that the handwritten note on the factory form suggests the printed number was queried at the time but is not legible enough to actually settle which value is correct, leaving the L69's true torque output for 1984 an open question in this record.2

Two transmissions are documented from the same MVMA form: the standard THM 350C three-speed automatic with a 3.42:1 axle, and an optional 200-4R four-speed overdrive automatic with a 3.73:1 axle, the latter carrying the form's own footnote that its availability was interim and excluded California. This record's own specifications section otherwise carries only that 3.42:1 axle ratio, with no wheelbase, length, weight or other dimension recorded specific to 1984, a narrower specification picture than the drivetrain detail surrounding it.

This record's own options section is empty for the year despite the depth of engine and transmission detail described above, and only two exterior colors, Dark Blue Metallic and White, and three interior trim codes, a cloth bench and two cloth options in dark blue and blue, are documented, all drawn from the same 1984 dealer order guide. This record's own performance section is likewise empty, and its identification section repeats the same generation-wide SPID paint-code table used across the SS years, without asserting which of those five codes actually applied to 1984 specifically.2

A single unpublished lead references a Mexican-market 1984 Monte Carlo SS variant mentioned by MonteCarloSS.com, but this record notes that the linked page is dead and the claim concerns a non-US market, so it is not adopted into this record's own configuration or production data for the year, leaving the US-market figures already described above as the entirety of this record's sourced coverage for 1984.2

Where the sources disagree

1984 Monte Carlo SS L69 torque

  • 225 lb-ft @ 3,200 rpm (MonteCarloSS.com FAQ)2
  • 235 lb-ft @ 3,200 rpm as printed on the 1984 MVMA form (a struck 319 N-m beside it and a handwritten annotation on the page)

Both kept; the handwritten note on the factory form suggests the printed figure was queried, but it is not legible enough to settle the value.
