2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8: The Comeback That Sold Before It Showed
The revival's opening act: one model, one engine, three colours and a numbered dash plaque, planned at 6,400 cars for the United States.
United States · researched through 2026-09-23
The first production 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 crossed the block at Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale, Arizona, on January 19, 2008, weeks before the model had even made its public debut. It was HEMI Orange with carbon-fiber-look hood stripes, a chrome fuel filler cap and a five-speed automatic. The winning bid, $400,000, came from Craig Jackson, the auction company's own chairman and chief executive, and every dollar went to notMYkid, a charity working on adolescent behavioral health. Chrysler's announcement of the sale carried a harder fact for anyone hoping to buy the second car: only 6,400 Challenger SRT8s would be built for sale in the United States for 2008.1
The name had been off Dodge's list for a long time. Dodge's own history counts about 188,600 original Challengers sold across five model years before production stopped in April 1974, and a Mitsubishi-based Challenger with a 1.6-liter four followed from 1978 to 1984. The revival began as a show car at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show, a long-hood, short-deck two-door that Dodge described as resembling the Challengers of the 1970s. Principal exterior designer Michael Castiglione brought a 1970 Challenger into the studio, yet advanced design vice president Tom Tremont described the aim as building the car people remembered rather than reproducing the original's imperfections. The concept rode a 116-inch wheelbase, six inches longer than the original's.2,3
The go-ahead was announced at a racetrack. Shortly before NASCAR's Pepsi 400 at Daytona International Speedway, Chrysler Group president and chief executive Tom LaSorda announced that the Challenger would return to production after a nearly 35-year hiatus, debuting as a 2008 model in calendar 2008. He measured the reaction against the Viper: "We haven't seen this kind of spontaneous, passionate response to a car since we unveiled the Dodge Viper concept in 1989." Chief operating officer Eric Ridenour called the car "not just a re-creation; it's a reinterpretation."3
What reached the order books was deliberately narrow. For 2008 there was one Challenger, the SRT8, priced on November 28, 2007, at $37,995 including $675 destination. Dodge said dealers would begin taking orders on December 3 because of the demand, with cars arriving in spring. Every car carried a numbered dash plaque. Paint came in three colors, HEMI Orange, Bright Silver Metallic and Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Coat, and Chrysler's reveal kit listed navigation, Keyless Go, the MyGIG entertainment system and UConnect hands-free phone. The one mechanical choice the kit describes is tires: Goodyear F1 Supercar three-season rubber in place of the standard Eagle RS-A four-season tires.4,5
The hardware came from Dodge's SRT engineers, and it came as a set. The 6.1-liter SRT HEMI V-8 was advertised at 425 hp and 420 lb-ft and drove through a five-speed automatic with AutoStick, the only transmission offered that year, to a brake-lock differential. Brembo four-piston calipers clamped 360 by 32 mm vented rotors in front and 350 by 26 mm at the rear, inside forged 20-inch Alcoa wheels. The Challenger was built at Brampton, Ontario, on the same line as the Charger and Magnum. The number 425 had a history of its own: Dodge's 2014 retrospective rates the 1970 Challenger's 426 HEMI at 425 horsepower as well, though that was a gross rating from another era and not a like-for-like comparison.5,4,2
Demand ran ahead of the plan from the first day. Chrysler reported more than 4,300 orders placed on the first day of sale. Against the 6,400 cars announced for the United States, that is more than two-thirds of the year's planned run spoken for within a day, and because Chrysler said "more than," the true share was higher still. Marketing director Mike Accavitti said the new car had "generated a lot of excitement." A 2014 Dodge history later described 6,400 SRT8s as built for the model year. That comes from the same company and cannot confirm the plan independently, and it does not say whether cars for Canada sit inside the figure.1,2
Some questions a collector asks first have no factory answer. No manufacturer or registry breakdown of the 2008 run by color has surfaced, and a claim of 500 extra cars for Canada appears in a web article that cites no Chrysler source. The plaque answers a narrower question. Dealer listings show the form of one number out of 6,400, which matches the announced plan, but no factory plaque register has been located to show how the numbers were issued or whether every number was used. The honest total is the one Chrysler gave, and it remains a company figure rather than an audited count.4,1,2
The performance story for 2008 is Chrysler's own, and it should be read that way. The reveal kit promised 0-60 mph in the low five-second range, a quarter mile under 14 seconds and 0.88 g on the skidpad. Its braking claim is not even consistent with itself: the engineering section gives about 110 feet from 60 mph, while the overview says about 100 feet, and the 2009 SRT8 release repeats 110. None of those figures is a measured test of a customer car. They describe what Dodge's engineers said the car was built to do, not what a stopwatch recorded.5,6
The sales ledger shows how short the SRT8's solo act was. Chrysler reported 17,423 Challengers sold in the United States in calendar 2008. That is not a 2008 model-year count, because it includes 2009-model cars sold from the autumn, and it cannot be split by model year from the release. What it does show is that the limited-edition coupe had company within months. The 2009 line added the SE and the R/T, the latter with the 5.7-liter HEMI rated at 376 hp and 410 lb-ft with the manual, and the SRT8 gained the Tremec TR-6060 six-speed manual that 2008 buyers could not order.7,2,6
Seen from later years, the 2008 car was the opening act of a very long run rather than a curiosity. Dodge's 2014 history lists the Super Track Pack for 2010, the 392-cubic-inch HEMI at 470 hp and 470 lb-ft for 2011, and a steady stream of heritage colors and limited editions after that, including the return of the Shaker hood on the 2014 R/T. Every one of those cars traces back to a single-model, single-transmission, three-color coupe with a plaque on the dash and a $400,000 first sale. James Press, Chrysler's vice chairman and president, had called it "pure American pony-car muscle." The order books agreed before the public had seen one on a turntable.2,4,1

Coverage: Partial — researched sections are shown; missing ones are not yet sourced. Researched through 2026-09-23.
Every figure is labeled with how sure we are. Reported means a manufacturer, registry, or reference figure we cite but have not reconciled against factory records ourselves. Disputed means credible sources disagree and both are shown. Rows are separately scoped; don't add them together unless the note says they make up a total.
Key facts
- Announced US plan: 6,400 cars for 2008; more than 4,300 orders on the first day of sale.1
- The first production car (HEMI Orange, automatic) sold for $400,000 at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale on 19 January 2008, with proceeds to the notMYkid charity.1
- MSRP $37,995 including $675 destination; orders opened 3 December 2007.4
- Calendar-year 2008 US Challenger sales were 17,423. That figure mixes 2008 SRT8s with 2009-model cars sold in late 2008, so it is not a 2008 model-year count.7

No factory breakdown of the 2008 SRT8 by colour, and no Canadian allocation, was found in a manufacturer or registry source. Figures circulating online are listed under unpublishedLeads.
Rows are separately scoped; the announced plan, the retrospective built statement, first-day orders and calendar-year sales must never be added or netted against one another.
Dodge's own limited-colour table (August 2015, repeated in March 2016) gives the HEMI Orange count for 2008: 4,092 SRT8s worldwide. It lists no other 2008 colour and no model-year total, so the Silver and Black split is still unpublished; the difference between 6,400 and 4,092 must not be read as a Silver-plus-Black count, because 6,400 is a US figure and 4,092 is global.
