Cautions for this scheme
- Decoded from the manufacturer's own VIN coding guides filed with NHTSA. A decode shows what the VIN says, not what the car is; it is not authentication.
- Model years 2005-2011 are covered from the manufacturer's passenger-car VIN coding guides in NHTSA's Manufacturer Information Database (2007-2010 added 2026-09-23 from MID documents ORG3153, ORG6103, ORG6105 and ORG5929).
- Dodge Magnum is a multipurpose passenger vehicle (WMI 2D4 or 2D8) coded in the MPV/truck guides, not these passenger-car guides; 2006 and 2008 Magnums are decoded by us-17-dodge-magnum-2006-2008.
- In 2005-2010 the same line code A (and from 2007 K) means Chrysler 300 under a Chrysler WMI (x C 3) and Charger under a Dodge WMI (x B 3).
- Engine letters were re-coded for 2009: the 2005-2008 guides use R (2.7L), G (3.5L), H (5.7L HEMI) and W (6.1L SRT HEMI); the 2009-2010 guides use D (2.7L), V (3.5L), T (5.7L) and W (6.1L); 2011 adds G for the 3.6L and J for the 6.4L. Each engine entry is scoped to the years of the guide that lists it.
- Body codes changed from digits (3 = 4-door sedan tall, style 48; 4 = 2-door pillared hardtop, style 22) to letters (C, D) in the 2010 guide.
- Series codes 1, 2, 8 and 9 for 2010 (for example 300S and Charger Rallye) come from the guide revision of 27 January 2010 and later; the June 2009 revision does not list them.
- For export vehicles with sales code ABB, position 6 (2006) and position 10 (2006, 2011) carry manufacturer tracking codes instead of series / model year.
Where the sources disagree
- MY2010 series codes 1, 2, 8 and 9 appear only in the 27 January 2010 and later revisions.
- MY2010 Chrysler LX series 4 names two models.
