For 1950 the Rocket 88 kept its 135-horsepower Rocket 303 V8 but gained a genuine standard transmission of its own, a three-speed manual that Wikipedia describes as a modified Cadillac gearbox, with the four-speed Hydra-Matic still available as a $205 option. The car's biggest moment that year came on the road rather than the showroom floor: Hershel McGriff and Ray Elliott won the first Carrera Panamericana, run May 5 through 10, 1950, driving an Oldsmobile 88, with other 88s finishing fifth, sixth, and seventh in the same grueling Mexican road race.1,2,3

Over-Drive's production table shows 257,649 Series 88s built for the year, and its own text states the V8-powered 88 outsold the six-cylinder Series 76 by almost eight to one. Within that total, 1950 marked the last year for the fastback Club Sedan body, which found 31,093 buyers, just as a new notchback two-door sedan arrived and immediately outsold it, reaching 50,561 units in its debut year. The four-door sedan remained the volume leader by a wide margin at 141,117, more than half the entire Series 88 total on its own, while the station wagon sat at the opposite end with just 2,382 built.1

The Rocket V8's own rating carries two figures depending on which factory document is read: Over-Drive's advertised number and the AMA specification sheet both agree the bare engine made 135 horsepower at 3,600 rpm and 263 lb-ft at 1,800, but the same AMA sheet separately lists 129 horsepower and 255 lb-ft "with standard accessories," the fan, generator, starter, air cleaner, muffler, manifolds, and fuel and water pumps installed, a lower figure that reflects the parasitic loss of running gear a bare-engine dynamometer test never saw. Shipping weights varied meaningfully by body too, from 3,454 pounds for the Club Coupe up to 3,835 for the Station Wagon, a 381-pound spread across the Series 88 lineup.4

Buyers choosing an 88 picked from a genuinely wide accessory sheet: a heavy-duty air cleaner at $4.40, an oil filter for V8 cars at $9, auxiliary driving and fog lights at $16, and a Super DeLuxe radio at $96 sat alongside dozens of smaller items running from $2 trunk lights and glove box lights up to a $60 DeLuxe Condition-Air heater and defroster. The Series 88 also offered a genuinely broad color palette, thirteen shades from Black and Adler Green through Chariot Red and Almond Green, paired with a choice of four upholstery materials, striped cloth, broadcloth, nylon surrey weave, or leather.1

The 1950 Series 88 measured 202.0 inches overall except for the station wagon at 205.0, spanning 75.19 inches wide and 64.06 inches tall, with a 57.0-inch front track against 59.0 at the rear and 7.60x15 tires shared with the larger 98. The AMA specification sheet also records a separate 'taxable horsepower' figure of 45.0 for the Rocket V8, a period rating formula distinct from either of the engine's two dynamometer figures and calculated on a different basis entirely rather than measuring the engine's actual dynamometer output the way its other two ratings did.1,4
