Cautions for this scheme
- A decode reads what Oldsmobile's own shop manuals say each character means. It does not prove the car is original or is the car the plate was made for.
- The serial shows model year, series, assembly plant and a sequence number that restarts at each plant. Body style, engine and options are not in it.
- Through 1957 the sequence started at 1001 and was printed without leading zeros, so a serial can be 8, 9 or 10 characters long (gm-oldsmobile-1949-1957-short and -long decode the 8- and 10-character forms). From 1958 the sequence is five digits starting 01001.
- Coverage: 1949, 1950, 1952–1954, 1956–1963 (1953: plants M and A only; 1962 Jetfire not covered). 1951, 1955 and 1964 have no sourced table and decode as unknown.
