Flat Rock Hands Mustang from S550 to S650

Flat Rock hands the Mustang from S550 to S650 — the only one of the three still standing, and the handoff that proves it.

The last 2023 Mustangs closed the sixth generation at Flat Rock while the seventh-generation car waited under a 2024 model-year identity. The exact final S550 VIN, completion time, shift, and worker roster remain acquisition targets; this page does not invent a ceremonial last car. What Ford’s documents establish is enough to frame the handoff: 2023 was the final S550 model year, and the new Mustang revealed in calendar 2022 belonged to 2024.

That model-year boundary prevents Dark Horse from appearing in the 2023 selector. A reveal date, order-opening date, or early build photograph cannot backdate the road car. Likewise, later GT3, GT4, or Dark Horse R programs remain race or later-model-year branches. The comparison shows what a U.S. customer could select as a 2023 S550 baseline.

EcoBoost begins with 310 horsepower and 350 pound-feet. The six-speed baseline uses a 3.31 limited-slip axle, while the ten-speed baseline uses 3.15. High Performance Package raises advertised output to 330 horsepower and maps both transmissions to 3.55 Torsen. Package identity remains explicit because the 20-horsepower difference is not a generic EcoBoost option.

GT uses the 5.0-liter V-8 at 450 horsepower and 410 pound-feet with six-speed or ten-speed. The manual baseline’s 3.55 mapping is supported. The automatic’s final drive remains held until the order-code dependency is normalized; Ford’s guide explicitly makes 3.55 optional outside the relevant package. The selector does not choose the most repeated ratio and call it standard.

Mach 1 closes the released range at 470 horsepower and 410 pound-feet. Its Tremec six-speed uses 3.73 Torsen, while the ten-speed uses 3.55 Torsen. Manual and automatic receive independent rows even though engine output is shared. The gearbox and axle are part of the buyer’s exact car rather than a display filter.

The resulting eight Mustang configurations span 310 to 470 horsepower without importing Shelby or seventh-generation data. Convertibles remain held as body expansions where weight, equipment, package, or axle may differ. A fastback baseline does not authorize a convertible row merely because an engine and transmission were broadly available.

Flat Rock’s workers and the product team need separate voices. Plant labor, launch management, powertrain engineering, calibration, design, supplier work, and customer communities experienced the transition differently. Ford releases can name executives and program intentions, but plant newspapers, union records, final-build documentation, and oral histories must establish the closing scene.

That scene should resist a lone-savior story. S550 did not become global, survive a decade, and hand off to S650 through one designer or executive. Nor did Flat Rock simply press a button on an unchanged car. Thousands of repeated production decisions made the final model year possible. Names and roles should be added as records support them.

The S650 reveal belongs in the aftermath because it explains what the plant was preparing to build. It does not contribute a configuration to the 2023 table. The new exterior, cockpit, engines, and Dark Horse can be described on 2024 pages. Here, their presence is the future exerting pressure on a final-year range still being sold.

The same precision protects comparisons. A reader can place 2023 Mach 1 manual beside 2015 GT350, 2010 GT500, or 1967 Mustang GT and Camaro configurations. Each row retains its own rating convention, fuel note, transmission, axle status, and body. Cross-year freedom works because the interface never claims the numbers were measured under one timeless standard.

Mach-E stays out because it is an electric SUV branch under the approved inventory, not a S550 body configuration. Its Mustang name can become a contextual identity story elsewhere. Adding it to this exact coupe comparison would erase body and product scope. Future electric Mustang speculation is not 2023 evidence either.

The page links directly to Mustang Facts’ 2023 year page for deeper model chronology. A reciprocal link should return to this exact S550 handoff or comparison only after the route is deployed and the sibling worktree can be edited safely. No generic family strip or footer is needed.

Images of the final production sequence, workers, or S550/S650 transition require exact date and rights. Ford media or Heritage display is not blanket commercial permission. Candidate review copies remain outside Git, marked for licensing review, with creator, holder, exact car and moment, crop, credit, and visible-worker privacy recorded.

Production totals and “last of” claims need the same rigor. A final VIN identifies one completion boundary; a model-year total requires final accounting; package and transmission breakdowns require their own records. Auction copy or owner registry data cannot synthesize factory totals. Rarity is not a substitute for the labor and engineering story.

The handoff matters because 2023 was both complete and transitional. S550 still offered eight exact baseline performance choices while the public knew a new generation was coming. Keeping Dark Horse in 2024 and unresolved axle data on hold lets the final-year story remain true to the cars Flat Rock was actually finishing.

The outgoing catalog also shows why “final year” is not one configuration. EcoBoost High Performance Package and Mach 1 were materially different from their base engine relatives, while GT automatic carried an unresolved axle dependency. A last-year retrospective that lists only maximum horsepower would erase most buyers and conceal the order logic the comparison is designed to preserve.

Period reviews may later add acceleration, braking, and handling, but every test must identify transmission, package, axle, tire, fuel, body, pages, conditions, and method. A Mach 1 result cannot be pasted over GT, and a Performance Package test cannot represent base EcoBoost. Modern modified-car measurements remain separate again.

The handoff also offers a people page beyond executives. Owners placing final S550 orders, dealers interpreting constrained packages, suppliers winding down components, and launch teams preparing S650 encountered different versions of the transition. Contemporary records can connect those perspectives without treating one corporate reveal as the entire lived history.

That broader record is the next refinement target.

It deserves names, dates, and exact roles.
