Cautions for this scheme
- A decode reads what Pontiac's own 1964 shop manuals say each character means. It does not prove the car is original.
- The first digit gives the number of cylinders only (6 or 8), not the engine size. The GTO was an option on the LeMans (series 22) in 1964, so the serial cannot show it.
- The sequence start is not stated for 1964; the manuals' example uses 1001, so 8-, 9- and 10-character forms are decoded.
