Cautions for this scheme
- Decoded from Ford's own VIN code submissions to NHTSA (2017, 2018 and 2019 model years). A decode shows what the VIN says, not what the car is; it is not authentication.
- Positions 5-7 are a three-character line code. Only the Taurus (including the SHO, P2K) and the Mustang (for hand-off) are tabulated; engine codes are read only against the Taurus lines, because Ford assigns engine letters per vehicle page. Mustang engine codes are not published (see leads).
- The Taurus ended with the 2019 model year; later Ford VINs are not covered.
- Restraint codes are Ford's category codes; the category wording changed with the 2018 Revision No. 4 (see conflicts).
Where the sources disagree
- Restraint category 12 (code T) means frontal air bags and knee restraint without side restraint in the 15-category legend (2017 and 2018 revisions up to No. 3) and adds side restraint (1st row) in the 16-category legend from 2018 Revision No. 4.
- On the 2017 Mustang page the marks for codes 6 and T show side 1st row and driver knee only, which fit neither category 7 nor category 12 as the grid assigns them.
- The 2018 Mustang page template prints F in position 10, while the same page's legend gives J = 2018.
- The initial 2019 submission lists Mustang line P8S Shelby GT500 Coupe and engine J 5.2L; Revision 2 (June 20, 2018) removes both.
