1953 Hudson Hornet: A Repeat NASCAR Champion, and No Settled Twin H-Power Rating
Herb Thomas won a second NASCAR title and Hudson won 22 premier-series races, but Hornet production slid again to 27,208.
United States · researched through 2026-09-23
Hudson built 27,208 Hornets for 1953, badged 7C, a production run down from the debut year's pace even as the car kept winning on track. Herb Thomas won the 1953 NASCAR championship, becoming the series' first repeat champion, and Hudson took 22 premier-series victories that year; Old Cars Weekly's count of 22 wins in 37 major NASCAR races and 13 in 16 AAA races puts Hudson's combined record at 35 wins out of 53 races across both sanctioning bodies. Frank Mundy added the 1953 AAA stock-car title to Hudson's season, giving the marque championships in two different series in the same year, a competition record that stood in some contrast to a production count that kept sliding from the Hornet's strong debut.1,2,3
Exactly how much power the 1953 Twin H-Power option produced is not something the record settles. Old Cars Weekly's own 1953 feature states 210 horsepower for the dual-carburetor setup with its split exhaust, bigger valves, hotter cam, and higher-compression head, but the outlet's 1954 article on the following model year describes 170 and 210 horsepower as ratings for a separate 7-X engine package rather than Twin H-Power alone, and its earlier 1951 article gives 160 horsepower for that year's different Twin-H setup. The 210-horsepower figure most likely describes the 7-X package rather than the plain 1953 Twin H-Power option, but without a period Hudson specification sheet or AMA document, the record leaves the 1953 rating open rather than picking one of the three conflicting figures, a genuine gap in a record that otherwise ties every other 1953 engine option to a specific horsepower number.2
The club's monthly build table shows the shape of the run itself: Hornet assembly started in November 1952 at 2,661 cars, climbed to a peak of 5,034 in March 1953, and fell away fast after that, down to 1,688 in May, 714 in July, and nothing at all recorded for August. Within that run, the club table gives an approximate 910 Hornet Hollywood hardtops, a figure the table itself marks as approximate and explains no method for, and Wikipedia separately gives roughly the same number, about 910, citing a commercial listing page rather than a factory record, so the two figures are held as broadly consistent with each other rather than as independent confirmation of one precise, final count.1
Hudson's February 1953 price folder shows the Hornet's factory town delivered range spanning $2,741.99 for the club coupe up to $3,342.05 for the Convertible Brougham, with the four-door sedan at $2,768.86 and the Hollywood hardtop at $3,095.15 in between. Shipping weight climbed with the body style too, from 3,530 pounds for the club coupe to 3,760 pounds for the convertible, and Twin H-Power itself cost $85.60 on top of any of those base prices, considerably less than the $110.77 overdrive option or the $175.71 Hydra-Matic, whose printed price the scanned folder shows struck through and amended by hand to a higher figure, a small piece of evidence that Hydra-Matic pricing changed even within the 1953 model year.4

Coverage: Partial — researched sections are shown; missing ones are not yet sourced. Researched through 2026-09-23.
Every figure is labeled with how sure we are. Reported means a manufacturer, registry, or reference figure we cite but have not reconciled against factory records ourselves. Disputed means credible sources disagree and both are shown. Rows are separately scoped; don't add them together unless the note says they make up a total.

Where the sources disagree
Twin H-Power rating
- 210 hp with Twin-H Power (dual carburetors, split exhaust, bigger valves, hotter cam, higher-compression head) — Old Cars Weekly's 1953 article2
- Twin-H 170 hp and 210 hp only for the separate 7-X engine — Old Cars Weekly's 1954 article, for the 1954 model year2
- 160 hp with Twin-H — Old Cars Weekly's 1951 article, for the 1951 model2
No 1953 Twin H-Power rating is published as fact. The 210 hp figure appears to describe the 7-X-type package rather than Twin H-Power alone; a 1953 Hudson specification sheet or AMA sheet would settle it.
