A hardtop coupe joined the convertible, output rose to 345 hp, and the Starfire had its best year: 42,762.
United States · researched through 2026-09-23
1962 was the Starfire's best year by production volume, and the reason was partly structural: Oldsmobile added a two-door hardtop alongside the existing convertible, giving the model a second, more practical body style for the first time and a genuinely different way to buy into the Starfire name beyond the open-top convertible alone. Both shared the same 394-cubic-inch V8, the only engine offered, rated 345 horsepower at 4,800 rpm and 440 lb-ft at 3,200 on 10.25:1 compression through a single Rochester four-barrel carburetor, the same output regardless of which of the two body styles a buyer chose.1,2
Over-Drive's production table shows 34,839 hardtops at a factory price of $4,131 and 7,149 convertibles at $4,744, plus 774 export cars, for a series total of 42,762, the strongest single year the Starfire had across its full 1961-1966 production run. The hardtop alone outsold the convertible by nearly five to one, making it the clear volume choice once buyers had a fixed-roof option to go alongside the open car, a pattern common across the era's personal-luxury coupes and convertibles more broadly.1
Over-Drive describes the Starfire's standard equipment as everything included on the Super 88 plus a genuinely long list of items sold separately elsewhere in the Oldsmobile line: a sports console, a tachometer, Hydra-Matic with a console-mounted shifter, power brakes, power steering, brushed-aluminum side trim, dual exhaust with fiberglass-packed mufflers, and leather upholstery, a package that read closer to a fully loaded personal-luxury car than an ordinary full-size Oldsmobile. That standard-equipment list meant a Starfire buyer skipped several line items other full-size Oldsmobile buyers had to pay extra for individually, a genuine value proposition wrapped into the car's higher base price. Buyers chose from fifteen exterior colors on the full-size Oldsmobile palette, though Over-Drive's own color chart is not Starfire-specific and applies across the wider Dynamic 88, Super 88, and Ninety-Eight lines as well.1
Weight climbed noticeably from hardtop to convertible: the AMA specification sheet gives the hardtop coupe a 4,368-pound curb weight, split 2,410 pounds front and 1,958 rear, against 4,521 pounds for the convertible, split 2,494 and 2,027, a roughly 153-pound penalty for the open body's reinforced structure and folding top mechanism, weight the AMA sheet also breaks out separately by axle for each body style. Both bodies shared a 213.9-inch overall length, 77.9-inch width, and 61-inch track front and rear, riding on 8.50x14 tires, with the hardtop standing 55.6 inches tall against the convertible's 55.9.3,1
The standard Hydra-Matic itself ran a 3.51 first gear down through 2.93, 1.56, and 1.00, with a 3.53 reverse, paired with a 3.42:1 rear axle on every Starfire regardless of body style. Since so much was already standard, the remaining options sheet leaned toward comfort items rather than performance parts: air conditioning at $435, power windows at $106, a Super DeLuxe signal-seeking radio at $124, and smaller items like an electric clock at $19 and a rear window defroster at $21, none of them touching the drivetrain, since the Starfire buyer had already gotten that fully equipped from the factory as standard content rather than a build-it-yourself options list.1
