1974 Javelin AMX: the final year
The final Javelin AMX: 4,980 built, with the Go Package's cowl induction dropped and a production run that stretched into November 1974.
United States · researched through 2026-09-22
1974 was the last year of both the Javelin and the Javelin AMX, with the enthusiast production table giving 4,980 AMXs, body 7479-8: 1,884 with the 304, 2,320 with the 360 and 776 with the 401. AMC's own 1974 full-line brochure presents Javelin AMX as a model identity within the broader Javelin range rather than as a wholly separate car. This record's own overview cites both the enthusiast production table and the factory brochure for that framing, with JavelinAMX.com's own production totals independently matching the 4,980 figure.1,2
Planet Houston AMX reports that AMC obtained an extension letting 1974 production run unusually long, from August 1, 1973 through the end of November 1974, and this record's own production notes flag that cars built from mid-July 1974 onward can show oddities such as 1975 model-year colors or steel hoods rather than the usual fiberglass. The 1974 Go Package itself dropped cowl induction entirely, so this record states plainly that no 1974 AMX was built with functional cowl induction at all, with this record's own key facts describing the 1974 package overall as the 1971-73 package minus that one element. Some late-1974 cars additionally received steel hoods once the usual hood supply ran out during that extended production run.1,3
The four production rows, the 4,980 total and its 304/360/401 split, are treated in this record's own notes as one lineage: they partition cleanly, and the same figures reappear on AMC's own 1974 tally sheet for row 7479-8 at Kenosha, cumulative to November 1974, indicating the typed enthusiast table was transcribed from that factory sheet rather than independently compiled. The Javelin AMX carried a factory price of $3,299 and a shipping weight of 3,184 lb for the year, with the Go Package itself still priced at $410 with the 360 or $499 with the 401, the same figures this record documents across the whole 1971 through 1974 span of the package.4,1,3
Three engines are documented, each under the SAE net ratings basis: a 150-hp, 245-lb-ft 304 two-barrel standard on the AMX with a full rpm breakdown recorded, alongside a 175-hp 360 two-barrel and a 220-hp 360 four-barrel, and a 255-hp 401 four-barrel, the latter three carried in this record without a stated rpm point for either power or torque. This record's own conflicts section separately flags a market-scope dispute on the 401's rating specifically: the 255-hp net figure carried as the US figure in this record sits alongside a Canadian brochure's own printed 235 hp at 4,600 rpm and 335 lb-ft at 3,200 rpm for what appears to be the same engine, with this record keeping both attributed by market rather than assuming the Canadian figure also applied to US-market cars.5
Three transmissions are documented: a three-speed manual on the floor standard with the 304 on both Javelin and AMX, a Torque-Command automatic in column or console form optional across all three engines, and a four-speed manual on the floor optional specifically with the 360 four-barrel and the 401. Whether the Pierre Cardin interior option continued into 1974 is itself disputed in this record's own conflicts section: Planet Houston AMX's interior codes list 'W' for Pierre Cardin in 1974, while JavelinAMX.com states that all AMC's special-edition models disappeared for 1974, and this record notes that only a 1974 order guide could settle which account is correct.1,2
Thirteen exterior paint codes and five interior color codes are documented for 1974, alongside a 3,184-lb shipping weight already noted above as the only dimensional specification recorded for the year; no wheelbase, length, width or other dimension was found in an accessible source for the 1974 AMX specifically. The sixth VIN digit '8' and door-tag model number 7479-8 identify a 1974 AMX, with this record's own identification note repeating the caution that late builds from mid-July through November 1974 may carry 1975 colors or a steel hood rather than the usual specification for the model year.1,3

Coverage: Partial — researched sections are shown; missing ones are not yet sourced. Researched through 2026-09-22.
Every figure is labeled with how sure we are. Reported means a manufacturer, registry, or reference figure we cite but have not reconciled against factory records ourselves. Disputed means credible sources disagree and both are shown. Rows are separately scoped; don't add them together unless the note says they make up a total.

The engine rows also appear on the AMC tally sheet (1974 sheet, row 7479-8 79-8, Kenosha: 304 = 1,884, 360 = 2,320, 401 = 776, total 4,980, cumulative to November 1974). The typed table appears to be transcribed from it; one lineage.
Paint: the 1974 chart lists P1 Classic Black only for Matador and Ambassador; no Javelin black is listed. Listed colours are what was offered; no per-colour production is known.
