Elite Arrives, Sport Shrinks to One Body

The 1974 lineup added the Gran Torino Elite as its own hardtop model, while the Gran Torino Sport survived only in a single formal-roof hardtop body at 23,142 units. The line's total production is disputed by a pair of figures that differ only by digit transpositions within what looks like the same underlying lineage: Ford-Torino.de's own eleven body rows add to 428,086, including 96,064 Elites, while Wikipedia's Standard Catalog citation instead gives 426,086, including 96,604 Elites; this record shows both without picking one, since Ford-Torino.de's rows are at least internally consistent with its own stated total.1,2
The 351 Cobra Jet, not offered on the new Elite, is rated 255 hp at 5,600 rpm and 290 lb-ft, and a 460 four-barrel option is rated 220 hp and 355 lb-ft, with a 460 Police Interceptor version restricted to police packages rated higher still at 260 hp and 380 lb-ft. A 400 two-barrel offered 170 hp and 330 lb-ft, and a 302 two-barrel, the only standard engine, offered 140 hp and 230 lb-ft; Cruise-O-Matic was required with every engine except the 302, meaning a manual transmission was effectively confined to the base engine alone for 1974. The 351 four-barrel option itself required Cruise-O-Matic along with power steering and power brakes, so ordering the Cobra Jet meant accepting all three of those items together rather than choosing among them independently.1,3
Every price in this record comes from a PHH fleet dealer-invoice schedule dated September 21, 1973, months ahead of the 1974 model year it covers and not a retail figure; prices ran from $2,487.46 for the Torino four-door pillared hardtop to $3,400.93 for the Gran Torino Squire wagon, with the Gran Torino Brougham hardtop, at $3,179.67, priced above every body style in the lineup except that Squire wagon. The Gran Torino Sport hardtop itself, now the only body it came in, invoiced at $2,975.49.3
Beyond the engine and transmission charges, the option sheet ran to a $367.42 power sun roof requiring a vinyl roof and restricted to two-door models, $62.40 opera windows also restricted to two-doors, and a $283.16 stereo tape system paired with AM/FM. A Trailer Towing Package, Class III, at $91.40 required the 460 specifically and was itself restricted to non-wagon bodies, while low-back bucket seats on the Sport were listed at no additional charge. Power front disc brakes, standard on wagons already, cost $53.26 elsewhere, and Magnum 500 wheels ran $91.25 on the Sport and Brougham against $117.83 on other models.3
The data plate decoder lists eleven body codes for 1974, adding 65M for the new Gran Torino Elite hardtop to the returning Torino, Gran Torino, Gran Torino Sport, Squire, and Brougham codes. Axle codes ran from a 2.75 ratio up to a 3.55 ratio, each available with or without Traction-Lok, and transmission codes covered the 3-speed manual, two 4-speed manual codes, and four automatic codes including a C6 Special for police and trailer-towing use. Interior trim ran to dozens of codes, including the Gran Torino Brougham Squire wagon's own five color combinations in Super-Soft vinyl and pleated vinyl, layered on top of the cloth, cloth-and-vinyl, and all-vinyl trims spread across Torino, Gran Torino, Gran Torino Sport, and the plain Brougham.1
