1973 AMC Gremlin X / V8
The V8 Gremlin X continued, with new stripes and an available Levi's denim-look interior. No production split has been found.
United States · researched through 2026-09-22
For 1973 the Gremlin X package received a new tape-stripe pattern that kicked up over the rear wheel flares, and AMC added a Levi's-branded interior trim package in spun nylon styled to look like denim as a new option. The base 2-door sedan with the standard six-cylinder engine carried a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $2,098, a figure from the master price table that explicitly excludes the X package's added cost. That base price applied to the 46-5 body style, the same production row AMC's own tally sheet later uses to report engine splits for the whole Gremlin line, X package and standard cars combined.1,2
No source consulted turns up a production count specific to the Gremlin X package or its V8 take rate for 1973, a gap this record's own keyFacts explicitly flags as "missing is not zero" rather than treating the absence as a zero. AMC's own final model-year tally sheet instead reports only whole-Gremlin totals broken out by plant and engine rather than by trim: at Kenosha, 8,834 cars left the line with the 304 V8, 44,225 with the 232 six, and 32,122 with the 258 six, summing to a Kenosha total of 85,181; at Brampton, Ontario, the split was 2,838 with the 304, 23,197 with the 232, and 11,628 with the 258, for a Brampton total of 37,663. None of these figures can be attributed to the X package specifically, since AMC's tally covers every trim built on the Gremlin body that year, and the six-cylinder totals at both plants dwarf the V8 figures, underscoring how small a fraction of the run the 304-equipped cars represented even before any X-specific split could be made from within that smaller group.1,3
A separate, five-year combined figure of 40,994 Gremlins built with the 304 V8 across 1972 through 1976 is attributed to a specific published source but has not been independently checked against that book, and like the plant totals it carries no per-year or X-package breakdown of its own. The record names AMC's own production reports and the Standard Catalog of American Cars as the sources most likely to close this gap, but notes that neither has yet been consulted for this model year.1
Fifteen exterior colors were charted for 1973, and eight of them formed the specific Gremlin X color selection: Snow White, Olympic Blue Metallic, Maxi Blue, Blarney Green, Pewter Silver Metallic, Mellow Yellow, Trans-Am Red, and Fresh Plum Metallic. The remaining colors on the chart, including Diamond Blue Metallic, Grasshopper Green Metallic, Fairway Green Metallic, Tallyho Green, Fawn Beige, Copper Tan Metallic, and the extra-cost Classic Black, were shared across the wider AMC line or restricted to other models rather than marked for the X package.
Of the eight X colors, four (Snow White, Olympic Blue Metallic, Pewter Silver Metallic, and Trans-Am Red) were available across the full AMC model line, while the other four (Maxi Blue, Blarney Green, Mellow Yellow, and Fresh Plum Metallic) were restricted to the Gremlin, Hornet, and in some cases Javelin rather than offered line-wide. Diamond Blue Metallic, Grasshopper Green Metallic, Fairway Green Metallic, Tallyho Green, Fawn Beige, and Copper Tan Metallic rounded out the chart as line-wide colors not marked for the X selection, and Classic Black stood apart as the one extra-cost color on the sheet, priced above the standard palette rather than included at no charge like the rest of the chart.

Coverage: Partial — researched sections are shown; missing ones are not yet sourced. Researched through 2026-09-22.
Every figure is labeled with how sure we are. Reported means a manufacturer, registry, or reference figure we cite but have not reconciled against factory records ourselves. Disputed means credible sources disagree and both are shown. Rows are separately scoped; don't add them together unless the note says they make up a total.
