1973 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu SS: The Only Year of the SS Wagon, and Three Different Production Totals

The Colonnade Chevelle's only SS year: RPO Z15 on the Malibu coupe and, for the first and only time, the station wagon, with a 245 net hp 454 available.

The 1973 Chevelle switched to GM's new Colonnade body, and it was the only year RPO Z15 SS equipment could be ordered on three different bodies: the Malibu sport coupe, the Custom El Camino, and, for the first and only time in Chevelle history, the Malibu station wagon. On the coupe, Z15 added Rally wheels, G70x15 white-letter tires, and special front and rear suspension; on the wagon it added a rear stabilizer bar and Turbine I wheels instead. Chevrolet's own Chevelle Report tabulates 28,647 Z15 installations against 249,880 Chevelles that could have taken the option, meaning roughly one in eight eligible buyers chose it.1,2

The big-block story changed for 1973. The 454-cubic-inch LS5, the top Chevelle engine for several prior years, was dropped, leaving the LS4 454 at 245 net horsepower as the largest engine offered, and for the first time a buyer could order that 454 without also ordering the SS package. The Chevelle Report counts 22,528 LS4 installations across the entire A-body line, but only a fraction of those went into SS cars: The Autopian, citing Robert Genat's book Chevrolet SS, puts the number of 1973 SS cars with the 454 at about 2,500, an estimate this record carries as approximate rather than as a Chevrolet-reported figure. The other two engines available were both 350s, at 145 and 175 net horsepower.1,3,4,2

How many 1973 Chevelles were built at all is an open question the record does not resolve. A vendor compilation puts the Deluxe/Malibu/Laguna total at 386,739; Old Cars Weekly separately reports 264,594 in sales, a different accounting basis entirely; and the Chevelle Report itself, working from what appears to be the most complete factory-adjacent production table, shows 451,716 Chevelles built including El Camino, or 742,409 across the full A-body line with Monte Carlo added in. The three figures use different scopes and different bases, and rather than pick one, the record shows all three as disputed until a Chevrolet-issued report settles it.5,3,2

Whatever the exact total, the buyers who chose a 1973 Chevelle overwhelmingly chose an automatic: Old Cars Weekly reports nearly 97 percent had automatic transmissions, and the Chevelle Report's own option counts back that up, with 704,574 Turbo Hydra-matic 350 installations against just 3,879 wide-ratio and 1,685 close-ratio four-speeds combined. Comfort and convenience options moved in far greater numbers than performance hardware: Four-Season air conditioning went into 572,288 cars, power brakes into 348,034, and the tilt steering wheel into 154,750, while Positraction, the closest thing to a performance option in the list, reached just 47,055 installations across the same 742,409-unit A-body base, underscoring how much of the 1973 lineup was built for comfortable cruising rather than the strip.3,2

A second, narrower disagreement involves a single figure: 42,941 units. Old Cars Weekly attributes that number to Malibu V8 coupes, but the Chevelle Report's own model-by-model table assigns 42,941 to the Laguna 2-door Colonnade hardtop coupe (1AE37) instead, and the same table separately shows 165,627 Malibu 1AD37 V8 coupes built that year. The record follows the more granular, row-by-row table's own labels rather than the single secondary figure, while keeping both readings visible rather than silently picking one.3,2

Coverage: Partial — researched sections are shown; missing ones are not yet sourced. Researched through 2026-09-22.

Every figure is labeled with how sure we are. Reported means a manufacturer, registry, or reference figure we cite but have not reconciled against factory records ourselves. Disputed means credible sources disagree and both are shown. Rows are separately scoped; don't add them together unless the note says they make up a total.

Key facts

  • RPO Z15 SS equipment: 28,647 sold in 1973.1,4
  • About 2,500 1973 SS cars had the 454, according to The Autopian, which cites Robert Genat's book Chevrolet SS.4
  • Nearly 97 percent of 1973 Chevelles had automatic transmissions, according to Old Cars Weekly.3
  • The Chevelle Report's 1973 table counts 28,647 RPO Z15 SS installations out of 249,880 cars that could take it, and 22,528 LS4 454s across the A-body line.2
  • Chevrolet's 1973 Chevelle book lists Z15 SS for the Malibu coupe (1AD37), Custom El Camino (1AD80) and Malibu wagon (1AD35), with every V8 except the 307; on the coupe it added Rally wheels, G70x15 white-letter tires and special front and rear suspension, and on the wagon a rear stabilizer bar and Turbine I wheels.
