1975 AMC Gremlin X / V8
Catalytic converters arrived, and steel-belted radials became standard with the X package.
United States · researched through 2026-09-22
For 1975 every US-market Gremlin gained a catalytic converter, requiring unleaded fuel, along with Prestolite electronic ignition, part of the broader emissions changes AMC applied to the Gremlin that year; the overview describes the converter and the ignition change together as a single package applying to all US-market cars rather than to any particular trim or engine. Steel-belted radial tires became standard equipment specifically on Gremlins ordered with the X package.1
No source consulted turns up a production count specific to the Gremlin X package or its V8 take rate for 1975, a gap this record's own keyFacts explicitly flags as "missing is not zero" rather than treating the absence as a zero. This record carries no AMC factory tally sheet for 1975; the only production figure present is a five-year combined total of 40,994 Gremlins built with the 304 V8 across 1972 through 1976, attributed to a specific published source but not independently checked against that book, and offering no per-year or X-package breakdown of its own.1
The base 2-door sedan with the standard six-cylinder engine carried a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $2,798, effective October 1974 and drawn from the master price table, a figure that explicitly excludes the X package. The X package itself is documented at a revised $201 under option code 478 GX2, effective with AMC's March 4, 1975 Vehicle Distribution Bulletin; that bulletin states the combined sticker price becomes $2,999 with the package, which checks out exactly against $2,798 plus $201. This is the package's revised, reduced-content price rather than its original one: the record notes that the original October 1974 X package price and its original content list were not recovered in this pass, leaving open what changed between the two versions of the package within the same model year, and by how much the price itself moved along with the content. No engine, transmission, interior, specification, performance, or identification data for the Gremlin X survives in the source material consulted for 1975.2
Fifteen exterior colors were charted for 1975, and all but two were available across the full AMC model line: Alpine White, Mellow Yellow, Sienna Orange, Trans-Am Red, Fawn Beige, Caramel Tan, Medium Blue Metallic, Deep Blue Metallic, Dark Cocoa Metallic, Ivory Green, Dark Green Metallic, Silver Dawn Metallic, and Classic Black. Pastel Blue and Green Apple were instead restricted to the Gremlin and Hornet specifically. The chart for this year also carried two quirks the production notes flag directly: Reef Green (H2) was overprinted as Not Available after having been planned, and Copper (F9) and Autumn Red (H8) were listed for the Matador only, so neither of those three colors is counted among the fifteen available to the Gremlin. Blue was the most represented family on the chart, with Medium Blue Metallic, Deep Blue Metallic, and the Gremlin-and-Hornet-only Pastel Blue joined by no fewer than three greens (Ivory Green, Dark Green Metallic, and the restricted Green Apple), giving buyers a wider spread of cool tones than the warmer earth colors like Sienna Orange, Caramel Tan, and Dark Cocoa Metallic.

Coverage: Partial — researched sections are shown; missing ones are not yet sourced. Researched through 2026-09-22.
Every figure is labeled with how sure we are. Reported means a manufacturer, registry, or reference figure we cite but have not reconciled against factory records ourselves. Disputed means credible sources disagree and both are shown. Rows are separately scoped; don't add them together unless the note says they make up a total.

Context rows are separately scoped. They are not Gremlin X production. The best sources to close the gap are AMC production reports or Standard Catalog of American Cars 1946–1975 / 1976–1999 (archive.org lending copies; not read).
Paint: the 1975 chart overprints H2 Reef Green as Not Available and lists F9 Copper and H8 Autumn Red for Matador only; those are omitted.
No 1975 Gremlin build figure was found. Searched 2026-09-29: conceptcarz (no 1975 Gremlin page found), automobile-catalog.com (HTTP 402); AMC tally sheets held here stop at 1974. The Standard Catalog of American Cars 1976-1999 or an AMC year-end report would close it.
