1957 Rambler Rebel: A Limited-Edition Precursor, Not the Same Car as the 1970 Machine
The first Rebel: a one-year Rambler four-door hardtop with AMC's new 327 V8. It is the precursor to the name the 1970 Machine carried, not the same car.

The 1957 Rambler Rebel was a one-year-only limited-production car, a 108-inch-wheelbase four-door custom hardtop built around AMC's newly introduced 327 V8, and it is the car that lent its name to the 1970 Machine rather than being the same model under a different badge, a distinction worth keeping clear given how often the two very different cars share only a name in casual conversation. Standard Catalog of American Cars describes it as offered in a single color scheme, light metallic silver-gray with a bronze-gold anodized aluminum side panel, and notes that many original cars were later repainted by dealers because the silver-gray finish faded, a detail that speaks to a genuine paint quality problem in period rather than just changing owner taste.1,2
The 327 V8 as sold made 255 horsepower at 4,700 rpm and 345 lb-ft at 2,600 rpm through a four-barrel carburetor, but a more ambitious version never reached production: Standard Catalog states that AMC had planned a fuel-injected 288-horsepower Rebel but abandoned it because of problems with the electronic control unit, leaving the carbureted 327 as the only Rebel engine buyers could actually order. Even the carbureted engine's own specifications carry a small disagreement, the period brochure stating 9.5:1 compression against the retrospective catalogue's 9.0:1, a gap the record shows rather than resolves since the contemporary brochure and the sourceless later catalogue each have a claim to credibility.2
Two separate reference books, Standard Catalog of American Cars and Consumer Guide's Complete Book of Collectible Cars, both give 1,500 Rebels built for 1957, and Wikipedia repeats the same figure. None of the three names an AMC production record directly, and the two books may well share the same underlying lineage rather than serving as genuinely independent counts, so the record reports 1,500 as the figure in circulation without treating it as independently verified. An actual AMC production report, if one surfaces, would settle the question the sources themselves cannot.2,3
At $2,786 factory price and 3,353 pounds shipping weight, the Rebel came with a genuinely long standard-equipment list for 1957: Airliner reclining seats with foam cushions, an electric clock, a radio with rear-deck antenna, Weather Eye heating, power brakes and power steering, windshield washers, back-up lights, padded visors and instrument panel, special wheel discs, 4-ply nylon whitewalls, undercoating, dual exhaust, and heavy-duty adjustable shock absorbers, all included rather than optional. AMC's own advertising claimed 0-60 mph in 7.5 seconds at Daytona Beach, but no independent test record or specified test configuration accompanies that number, so it is held here as an advertised claim rather than a verified performance figure.2
Beyond its equipment list, the Rebel measured 191.14 inches long, or 198.89 inches with the optional Continental tire mount, on a 71.32-inch width and 58.4-inch height, riding on 6.70x15 tires. Serial numbers for the series began at F-1001 and engine numbers at CN-1001, a dedicated numbering sequence separate from the rest of the 1957 Rambler line that reflects the Rebel's status as its own distinct, limited series rather than simply a trim level within the standard Rambler catalog.2

Coverage: Partial — researched sections are shown; missing ones are not yet sourced. Researched through 2026-09-22.
Every figure is labeled with how sure we are. Reported means a manufacturer, registry, or reference figure we cite but have not reconciled against factory records ourselves. Disputed means credible sources disagree and both are shown. Rows are separately scoped; don't add them together unless the note says they make up a total.
Key facts
- Two reference books give 1,500 built: the Standard Catalog of American Cars 1946-1975 (Rebel series 30, body 5739-2 four-door custom hardtop, $2,786, 3,353 lb) and Consumer Guide's collectible-cars book. Neither names an AMC record, and they may share a lineage, so the figure is reported, not verified.2,3
- The Standard Catalog calls the Rebel a limited-production car offered only in light silver-gray metallic, with black nylon and silver-gray vinyl upholstery and a full-length bronze/gold anodized side molding; it says many were later repainted by dealers because the silver-gray faded, and that fuel injection (288 hp) had been planned but was not produced because of problems with the electronic control unit.2
Production
| What was counted | Count | Basis | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rambler Rebel four-door custom hardtop (5739-2)2,3 Rambler Rebel (series 30) · 4-door custom hardtop (5739-2) · 327 V-8 · not stated Two reference books agree; neither names an AMC record and the catalogue is a likely source for the buyer's guide, so they are not treated as independent. The Wikipedia figure held in unpublishedLeads is the same number. | 1,500 | not stated (catalogue production total), model-year | Reported |
The single body row is the whole Rebel series for 1957 (one body style only).
An AMC production report would allow the figure to be verified. Searched 2026-09-29 for a stated series total or an AMC record: only the two catalogue books above were found, and they give the one body row. Old Cars Weekly (Dec 2008) says 1,500 units with no source named and words it as a carburetor count, so it is not cited. Nothing that states a separate series total was found, so the row stays a body row. An AMC production report would close it.

- Chrysler 300 letter series The Forward Look 300C added a convertible, a 392 Hemi rated at 375 or 390 hp and torsion-bar front suspension; its hardtop count is disputed between the club (1,767) and Over-Drive (1,918).
- Ford Thunderbird The last two-seat Thunderbird was also the fastest: a supercharged F-code 312 joined the dual-quad E-code, and 21,380 were built over a season that ran to December 1957.
- Studebaker Hawk The Golden Hawk dropped the Packard 352 for a McCulloch-supercharged Studebaker 289 with the same 275 hp rating. The Silver Hawk replaced the three lesser 1956 Hawks.
