1977 was the final year of the Colonnade-body Chevelle, and no performance package survived to close it out: the Laguna Type S-3 had ended after 1976, and no source consulted for this record shows any SS or S-3 successor for 1977. The engine range topped out at a 170-net-horsepower 350, with a 145-horsepower 305 as the base V8 and a 110-horsepower 250 six as the standard engine across the line.1,2

Both V8 options came with strings attached that show how far the Chevelle had moved from its performance-optioned past. Chevrolet's 1977 catalog requires Turbo Hydra-matic, power brakes, and power steering with either the $120.00 LG3 305 or the $210.00 LM1 350, meaning neither V8 could be ordered stripped down; the engine came bundled with the same convenience equipment regardless of how enthusiastically a buyer wanted the extra power. The closest thing to a handling option left on the sheet was the $36.00 F41 sport suspension, with heavier springs and shocks, a larger front stabilizer bar, and an added rear stabilizer bar, a modest, no-drama alternative to the dedicated performance suspensions that had once come bundled into a special-order package rather than sold on their own as a stand-alone option line item.

SS396.com's compiled production figures show 73,739 Malibu Classic coupes, 37,215 Malibu Classic Landau coupes, and 28,793 base Malibu coupes for the year, a combined 139,747 two-door Chevelles across the three trim levels. Chevrolet's own June 1977 price schedule prices those same three cars, in base six-cylinder form, at $3,895.65 for the base coupe, $4,135.65 for the Malibu Classic, and $4,364.65 for the Malibu Classic Landau, a roughly $469 spread from the plainest coupe to the most dressed-up one before any V8 or other options were added. Of the 139,747 combined coupes, the mid-tier Malibu Classic accounted for just over half, about 53 percent, against roughly 27 percent for the dressed-up Landau and 21 percent for the plain base coupe, showing most 1977 Chevelle buyers settled in the middle of the range rather than at either end of it.1

Emissions paperwork, not performance hardware, dominated the rest of the option sheet. California emission certification, RPO YF5, added $70.00, and a separate high-altitude emission package, RPO NA6, added $22.00 for cars registered where the base tune would not pass, options that speak to a Chevelle line built to clear regulatory hurdles state by state rather than to chase horsepower. Set against the emissions-sorted Laguna Type S-3 of 1974 through 1976 that preceded it, and the SS badge that came before that, the 1977 Chevelle closed out the Colonnade era as a comfortable, well-equipped family coupe with no performance model left to carry either name forward.2

The priciest items on the 1977 order sheet were comfort features rather than anything mechanical: Four-Season air conditioning, RPO C60, ran $514.00, and a stereo tape player paired with AM/FM stereo radio, RPO UM2, added $324.00 on top of that, together costing $838.00, more than the $330.00 combined cost of both V8 engine options. Variable-ratio power steering, RPO N41, was itself a $146.00 option that a buyer had to add separately rather than receive as part of a performance package, one more sign of how much of what earlier Chevelles bundled together was now sold piece by piece on an ordinary family coupe.

Coverage: Partial — researched sections are shown; missing ones are not yet sourced. Researched through 2026-09-22.

Every figure is labeled with how sure we are. Reported means a manufacturer, registry, or reference figure we cite but have not reconciled against factory records ourselves. Disputed means credible sources disagree and both are shown. Rows are separately scoped; don't add them together unless the note says they make up a total.
