The Trans Ams in Smokey and the Bandit were not quite 1977 models. Classic Industries' history of the film cars says Pontiac supplied four pre-production 1976 Trans Ams fitted with the coming 1977 front sheet metal, four rectangular headlights, new graphics and “6.6 LITRE” hood decals; Hagerty UK counts five cars supplied by General Motors and says the crew made the same updates. Both accounts agree on the point that matters: the black Trans Am that audiences saw in 1977 was dressed as the car Pontiac was then selling. Director Hal Needham's reason for choosing it, as Hagerty UK quotes him, was simple: “I needed a 'down the road' car for Bandit and the Trans Am fitted the bill.”1,2

That new face was the 1977 facelift. Tran-Zam's history describes the change: square headlights, newly certified by the Department of Transportation, set in pairs in a redesigned grille, with a more angular body around them. It arrived in the same year a film would put it in front of a national audience. The Trans Am underneath was a very different machine from the Super Duty car of four years earlier. Its engines now carried net ratings of 180 to 200 horsepower, its buyers were overwhelmingly ordering automatics and air conditioning, and its appeal rested at least as much on graphics and presence as on hardware.3

The black-and-gold scheme predated the film. Motorious credits General Motors design chief Bill Mitchell with the idea and ties it to Pontiac's 50th anniversary in 1976, when a Limited Edition Trans Am in black with gold pinstripes, grille and wheels was built in 2,590 examples. For 1977, Tran-Zam writes, the Limited Edition returned relabeled as the Special Edition and “sold like hot cakes,” which it attributes to the black Trans Am in the film. Even the order code is contested at the edges: Tran-Zam files both the coupe and the hatch-roof cars under Y82, while Motorious says Y82 applied to the T-top cars and Y81 to the hardtops. The difference is recorded here, not resolved.4,3

Under the hood, 1977 was an emissions year. Tran-Zam and MuscleCarClub list three engines for the Trans Am: the standard L78 Pontiac 400 at 180 net horsepower and 325 lb-ft; the W72 version, badged T/A 6.6, at 200 horsepower and 325 lb-ft, for $50 on a Trans Am or $205 on a Formula; and the Oldsmobile-built L80 403 at 185 horsepower. Tran-Zam says neither Pontiac 400 was available in California, where the 403 was standard in the Trans Am, and the same engine went into high-altitude cars. Every manual-transmission Trans Am had the W72. General Motors' engine sharing was spreading, too: on June 2, 1977, Tran-Zam records, Pontiac announced that its own 301 would give way to Chevrolet's 305.3,5

The order form shows what the image cost. Tran-Zam lists the Special Edition package with hatch roof at $1,143, a Hurst hatch roof alone at $587, the big Trans Am hood decal at $62, cast-aluminum snowflake wheels at $121 on a Trans Am, air conditioning at $478 and a Safe-T-Track limited-slip at $54. Against those numbers the W72's $50 was the cheapest performance on the sheet. Pontiac also spread the look downward: a Formula appearance package at $127 and, for the Esprit, a blue Skybird package listed at $315 to $342. The Trans Am's graphics had become a product in themselves, and Pontiac sold versions of them across the line.3

Buyers answered in numbers the Trans Am had never seen. Tran-Zam and MuscleCarClub count 155,735 Firebirds for 1977 and 68,744 Trans Ams, 44 percent of the line. The year before, the same tables give 46,704 Trans Ams among 110,775 Firebirds, so the Trans Am grew by about 47 percent in one model year. Special Editions account for 15,567 cars by Tran-Zam's table rows, 1,861 coupes and 13,706 hatch roofs, or about 23 percent of all Trans Ams; its narrative prints 15,576, a nine-car difference that looks like a transposed digit and is kept visible. Nearly nine of every ten Special Editions came with the hatch roof.3,5

Inside the 68,744, the engine and gearbox counts tell the same story of a car bought for its presence. Only 11,402 Trans Ams, about 17 percent, had manual transmissions; 57,342 were automatics. The W72 went into 26,177 cars, about 38 percent, and the Oldsmobile 403 into 6,476. The standard L78 total is itself disputed by exactly 1,000: Tran-Zam's rows add to 36,091, while MuscleCarClub prints 35,091 even though its own sub-rows reach 36,091. Among the 13,706 hatch-roof Special Editions, 6,030 had the L78 automatic, 2,699 the W72 with a manual, 3,760 the W72 automatic and 1,217 the 403, so fewer than one in five of the famous black-and-gold T-top cars had a stick.3,5

Across the whole Firebird line the pattern is even plainer. Of Tran-Zam's 155,735 cars, 140,768 had automatic transmissions, about 90 percent, against 14,015 four-speeds and 953 three-speed manuals; those three rows add to 155,736, one more than the model total, a slip preserved rather than corrected. Air conditioning went into 119,761 cars, about 77 percent, a limited-slip differential into 75,220, tilt steering columns into 80,731, power windows into 54,954 and cruise control into 25,399. The Firebird of 1977 was a well-equipped, comfortable car, and the Trans Am sold on that foundation plus a hood bird, a shaker scoop and a movie.3

How much of the 1977 surge the film caused cannot be separated out of production tables, and none of these accounts tries. Tran-Zam credits the Special Edition's sales to the movie, and Hagerty UK quotes Needham: “Sales just soared after the film's release.” The model-year counts show that the climb did not stop with 1977. For 1978 the same tables give 93,341 Trans Ams among 187,294 Firebirds, another 24,597 Trans Ams on top of the 1977 figure. Hagerty UK's rounder phrasing, about 25,000 additional Trans Am sales in 1978, lands close to that production difference. The film and the facelift arrived together, and so did the best years the Trans Am ever had to that point.3,2

The cars that made the film did not live to enjoy it. Classic Industries lists the four principal cars as a beauty car for close-ups and publicity, a general stunt car, the jump car and a parts donor, and says none is confirmed to have survived. The legend lived in the showroom instead. Tran-Zam calls the black-and-gold Trans Am still the most sought-after Firebird and the flagship symbol of the marque. That is a collector's judgment, not a statistic, but the numbers behind it are real: 15,567 Special Editions by the table rows, 68,744 Trans Ams, and a Firebird line that passed 150,000 cars in the year its best-known car became a film star.1,3

No price is shown here. One was, until 2026-09-24: a figure from J.D. Power's live valuation pages, pulled from every page on this site because those pages can change without our knowing and we have no way to check them independently. We haven't found a source we can stand behind to put in its place yet. A price for this car elsewhere that looks suspiciously exact may be quoting that same J.D. Power figure rather than confirming it — several sites we checked turned out to be doing exactly that, without saying so.

Where the sources disagree

1977 Special Edition total

  • 15,567 (1,861 coupes + 13,706 hatch roofs, table rows)3
  • 15,576 (narrative)3

The table rows are shown; the narrative figure is recorded. The nine-digit transposition suggests a typing slip in one place.

1977 Trans Am L78 total

  • 36,091 (sum of Tran-Zam rows 29,313 + 748 + 6,030)3
  • 35,0915

MuscleCarClub's own sub-rows sum to 36,091, so its printed 35,091 looks like a slip; both are kept.
