This record's own dek describes 1988 as the final G-body year, with 16,204 SS coupes built in a shortened model year, out of 30,174 Monte Carlos overall, meaning the SS accounted for more than half of total Monte Carlo output that year. Wikipedia's own table, citing the Standard Catalog of American Cars 1976-1999, and MonteCarloSS.com's own FAQ give the identical 16,204 figure, though this record's own production note states that the independence of those two lineages from one another is not established.1,2

The MonteCarloSS.com FAQ states that all 1988 SS coupes were built in Pontiac, Michigan, an assembly-plant detail this record carries as stated directly by that source rather than inferred from any other detail. GM's own tentative September 1987 price schedule lists the Monte Carlo SS sport coupe, order code 1GZ37 Z65, at $14,320 MSRP against $12,330 for the LS coupe, roughly a 16 percent premium for the SS, with this record's own key facts noting explicitly that these prices were tentative rather than final at the time the schedule was published, leaving open whether the SS actually shipped at exactly $14,320 for every 1988 car.2

Only one engine is documented for 1988: a 305 High Output four-barrel V8, rated 180 hp at 4,800 rpm and 225 lb-ft at 3,200 rpm on the SAE net standard, standard equipment on the SS. It pairs with the 200-4R four-speed overdrive automatic as the sole transmission, and a 3.73:1 axle is the only drivetrain ratio recorded, leaving the powertrain picture for 1988 considerably simpler in this record than the dimensional data described below. This record's own options section is empty for the year, with no separate RPO detail found beyond the base Z65 package itself, and no six-cylinder or alternate V8 recorded as available on the SS.2

Four exterior colors are documented, each keyed in the dealer order guide to a stripe color that itself depends on the interior chosen: Black with a light gold stripe for saddle interiors or a red stripe for gray or maroon interiors, Dark Maroon Metallic with a red stripe for maroon interiors, Silver Metallic with a gray stripe for gray or maroon interiors, and White with a dark gold stripe for saddle interiors or a red stripe for gray or maroon interiors. Nine interior trim codes are recorded across gray, maroon and saddle in bench, bucket-with-console and 45/55-seat configurations, three seat styles multiplied across three colors to give the full nine-way selection documented in the same order guide.

Specification detail from the factory sales book is unusually extensive for the year: a 108.0-inch wheelbase, 202.4-inch overall length, 71.8-inch width, 54.9-inch height, front and rear track of 58.5 and 57.8 inches, a 3,239-lb curb weight, 4,000-lb towing capacity, an EPA rating of 17 city and 24 highway mpg, an 18.1-gallon fuel tank and 16.2 cu ft of trunk volume, all drawn from a dedicated LS/SS comparison sheet in the same factory sales book. This record's own performance section remains empty despite that dimensional depth, and no conflict is logged for the final G-body model year.
