This record's own dek describes 1972 as the year the source engine table switches to net ratings, with both the Super Sport and the Rally Nova offered; the enthusiast-compiled total stands at 349,733 cars, of which 12,309 were Super Sports. This record's own overview states that every count comes from the same single enthusiast compilation, NovaResource.org, with engine ratings carried as SAE net figures per that source's own engine table for the year.1

Two body-style rows are documented, 260,215 cars in the source's own "2 Door Sedan" column and 89,518 four-door sedans, with the 12,309-car Super Sport figure kept separately scoped rather than folded into either. Four engines are documented for the year: the 250 six coded L22 at 110 net hp, the 307 V8 coded L14 at 130 net hp, and two 350 V8s, L65 at 165 net hp and L48 at 200 net hp. The installation figures in this record's production table sum exactly against its own V8 cylinder-count row: 129,403 307 V8 cars plus 80,561 350 V8 cars equal the 209,964-car V8 row also documented here.1

Four transmissions carry their own installation counts: 51,140 three-speed manuals, 5,840 M20 four-speeds, 140,912 M35 Powerglide automatics, and 151,841 M38 Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 automatics. This record's own key facts cite Chevrolet's 1972 Nova data book directly, which makes the 350 four-barrel L48 available only with Nova SS equipment on the Z26 coupe and restricts the wide-ratio four-speed option to that same L48, alongside a December 1, 1971 price schedule listing the Nova from $2,452.00 for the six-cylinder coupe to $2,577.00 for the V8 sedan, with the Nova SS option at $336.00 and the Rally Nova at $101.65.

This record documents an extensive, individually priced options list running past thirty codes: the Rally Nova (YF1) at $101.65 with its own separately sourced installation count of 33,319 units, a figure this record notes Wikipedia independently confirms; the Nova SS (Z26) at $336.00, bundling the 200-hp L48 without listing that engine separately by price; the wide-ratio four-speed (M20) restricted to the L48 at $200.65; and power front disc brakes (JL2) at $71.65, noted in this record as included automatically whenever the Nova SS was ordered.

Fifteen solid exterior colors and fifteen interior trim codes are documented for the year, while this record's own specifications and performance sections are both empty. Its identification section documents cowl-tag series and body codes, three assembly-plant abbreviations, LOS for Van Nuys, California, NOR for Norwood, Ohio, and WRN for Willow Run, Michigan, and a VIN engine-code table keying the fifth character to four engines: D for the 250 six, F for the 130-hp 307, H for the 165-hp 350, and K for the 200-hp 350.

This record's own identification section also states that the L48 was available only in the Super Sport for 1972, matching the restriction already documented in this record's own key facts from the 1972 data book. Conflicts and unpublished leads are both empty for the year, leaving production, prices, engines, transmissions, the extensive options list, paint, interiors and identification as the whole of this record's sourced coverage for 1972.1

The numbers

1972 Chevrolet Nova — The source engine table switches to net ratings; SS and Rally Nova offered. Enthusiast-compiled production: 349,733 cars; Super Sport 12,309.

Coverage: Partial — researched sections are shown; missing ones are not yet sourced. Researched through 2026-09-22.

Every figure is labeled with how sure we are. Reported means a manufacturer, registry, or reference figure we cite but have not reconciled against factory records ourselves. Disputed means credible sources disagree and both are shown. Rows are separately scoped; don't add them together unless the note says they make up a total.

Key facts

  • Total 1972 production per source: 349,733.1
  • Chevrolet's 1972 Nova data book makes the 350 4-bbl (L48) available only with Nova SS equipment (Z26, coupe only), and restricts the wide-ratio 4-speed to the L48.
  • Chevrolet's price schedule dated December 1, 1971 lists the 1972 Nova from $2,452.00 (six-cylinder coupe) to $2,577.00 (V8 sedan); the Nova SS option (Z26, with the 200-hp net 350) was $336.00 and the Rally Nova $101.65.

All counts are from one enthusiast compilation (NovaResource.org), which says its numbers were compiled from many sources and carry no guarantee; the underlying Chevrolet documents were not seen. Status is reported, or estimated where the source itself marks a value approximate or rounded.

Rows are separately scoped. Body, cylinder, engine-displacement and transmission rows each describe the whole line from a different angle and must not be added across groups.

A value missing from this table was marked unavailable ("?") or zero in the source and is not shown; missing does not mean zero.

Muscle-focus year. The GM Heritage vehicle information kit (best missing primary source; gm.com returned 403) should confirm SS, L78 and L34 install counts before these rows are promoted.

Same model year

Also in 1972

  • AMC AMX The first year of SAE net ratings and Chrysler-built TorqueFlite automatics. Javelin AMX production rose to 3,220, and the 304 V8 became available.
  • AMC Gremlin X and Spirit AMX The first V8 Gremlin: the 304 (150 hp SAE net) in AMC's subcompact. Gremlin X production is not published in any source found.
  • AMC Javelin The base model was dropped, so every non-AMX Javelin was an SST. This was the first year of the Pierre Cardin interior and of Chrysler-built automatics.
  • Buick Riviera Net ratings only for 1972: 250 hp standard, 260 GS per ROA; 2,171 of 33,728 were GS.
  • Buick Skylark Gran Sport, GS and GSX The last A-body GS year before the Colonnade Century; the GSX package, now in many colours, was invoiced on only 44 cars, most of them outside the lower 48 states.
  • Chevrolet Chevelle and Malibu SS The last Z15 Chevelle SS of the first generation: net-rated engines, an LS5 454 at 270 net hp, and 5,333 SS 454s.
  • Chevrolet El Camino SS Last year of the Chevelle-bodied El Camino SS; 50,359 V8 Malibu El Caminos were built, and the SS share is not separately published.
  • Dodge Challenger Hardtop only, with a new grille: the R/T gave way to the Challenger Rallye package, and the most powerful engine listed was the 340 four-barrel.
  • Dodge Charger The R/T and Super Bee were dropped; the new Rallye package became the performance Charger, and the 440 Six Pack was cancelled after a handful of cars.
  • Dodge Dart GTS, Swinger and Demon The Demon's second and final year under that name: 8,773 Demon 340s, with small Canadian and Swiss-market 340 runs counted separately.
  • Ford Maverick Grabber The dual-scoop-hood Grabber in its second year as a model; Classic Industries counts 35,347.
  • Ford Ranchero GT The Ranchero GT continued on the 1972-76 Ranchero; 12,620 GTs were built, per reference-site counts in the Standard Catalog lineage.
  • Ford Thunderbird First year of the sixth-generation Thunderbird; only the whole-line production total was found.
  • Ford Torino The new body-on-frame Torino sold 496,645 in 1972; the performance models were the Gran Torino Sport SportsRoof (60,794) and hardtop (31,239), with the 351 Cobra Jet and a Rallye Equipment Group on the option list.
  • Mercury Cougar Net ratings arrived, the 429 was gone, and the 351 Cobra Jet became the performance Cougar engine, fitted to 3,560 cars.
  • Mercury Montego GT The first year of the fastback-only Montego GT on the new split-wheelbase intermediate, with the Cyclone name reduced to a performance option that only a few dozen buyers took.
  • Oldsmobile Cutlass, 4-4-2 and Hurst/Olds The 4-4-2 became a Cutlass option again, engines were rated in SAE net (W-30: 300 hp), and a Hurst/Olds paced the Indianapolis 500.
  • Plymouth Barracuda and 'Cuda Hardtops only, single headlamps, four round taillamps, and a 340 four-barrel as the top engine: the 'Cuda carried it as standard.
  • Plymouth Duster 340 and 360 In the first net-rating year the Duster 340's 8.5:1 340 was rated 240 net hp with electronic ignition, the Twister became order code A51, and output rose to 15,681 in both compilations.
  • Plymouth GTX, Belvedere and Satellite For 1972 the GTX existed only as the 440 four-barrel option on the Road Runner hardtop; Mueller's Muscle Car Source Book counts 672 of them.
  • Plymouth Road Runner The hardtop-only Road Runner took a 400 four-barrel as its advertised standard engine, and production fell again.
  • Pontiac Firebird and Trans Am A strike-shortened year: 29,951 Firebirds and 1,286 Trans Ams, every one a 455 HO.
  • Pontiac GTO The GTO goes back to being an option on the LeMans, with net ratings only; 5,807 were built.
  • Pontiac Grand Prix A carryover year with the SJ still offered; production recovered to 91,961.
  • Pontiac Tempest and LeMans The GTO becomes a LeMans option, and the LeMans gets WW4 and WW5 performance packages.
