1972 Chevrolet Chevelle SS: The 454 That California Could Not Order
The last Z15 Chevelle SS of the first generation: net-rated engines, an LS5 454 at 270 net hp, and 5,333 SS 454s.
United States · researched through 2026-09-22
On Chevrolet's 1972 Chevelle option list the LS5 454 carries a short qualifier: not available in California. ChevelleStuff's tabulation of the year's final option report prices the engine at $272.00 over the Super Sport, with $286.50 appearing as another listed price, and counts 5,333 installations. A California buyer who wanted the biggest engine in the Chevelle catalog could not order it from that list. It is a small line of print, but it captures the year better than any horsepower figure: the big-block Chevelle was still for sale, and the rules around it were closing in.1
The horsepower figures changed language at the same moment. ChevelleStuff's engine table notes that Chevrolet's advertised ratings switched from gross to net for 1972, and every number reads smaller for it: the LS5 at 270 net horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 390 lb-ft at 3,200, the LS3 402 at 240, the L48 350 at 175, the L65 350 at 165 and the standard 307 at 130. A year earlier Chevrolet had printed the LS5 at 365 gross and 285 net. On a like-for-like net basis the LS5 slipped from 285 to 270; the headline fall from 365 to 270 mixes two conventions and should not be read as one loss.1,2
How many Super Sports Chevrolet built is the year's awkward question. ChevelleStuff's production page says 24,946 Malibu and Malibu/Custom El Camino cars had RPO Z15; its option page prints 29,946. The two differ by a single digit, the kind of gap one mistyped character would produce, but without the underlying Chevrolet report neither can be preferred, and both stay on the record. What does not move is the SS 454 count, 5,333 on both pages. Depending on which Z15 total is right, the big-block went into 21 percent of Super Sports or 18 percent.1
Either way, the big-block's share collapsed. In 1971, 9,502 of 19,293 SS cars carried the LS5, just under half. In 1972 the SS 454 count fell to 5,333, a drop of 44 percent, while the Super Sport total rose on either reading of the 1972 figure. The SS was selling more badges and stripes and fewer 454s. The heavy-duty close-ratio M22 four-speed, restricted to the LS5, followed the engine down from 3,035 installations to 1,513, and the D88 sport stripe, by contrast, went from 13,382 to 14,772.2,1
The package carrying the badge had become an equipment choice. ChevelleStuff's identification guide says Z15 stayed essentially the same as in 1971 and could be ordered with any optional V8, the L65 or L48 350s, the LS3 402 or the LS5 454, and with any optional transmission. The option list prices Z15 at $350.05 in one listing and up to $365.50 in others, and it marks the F41 special performance suspension as included with SS equipment. The ZL2 special ducted hood now required the SS together with either the LS3 or the LS5, where in 1971 it had demanded the LS5, and it went on 3,659 cars.3,1,2
Chevrolet's cheaper performance label grew even as the SS 454 shrank. The Heavy Chevy package, RPO YF3 at $145.35, went onto 9,508 standard Chevelles in 1972, up from 6,727 the year before. The LS3 went into 20,031 cars against 17,656 in 1971, although both figures include cars without the SS. The picture is of buyers moving toward the middle of the range: a big-block that was not the biggest, or a performance name on a base Chevelle, rather than the full SS 454 with its close-ratio gearbox.1,2
Add up the lines a buyer needed for a full-house SS 454 and the price moved the wrong way for the story of decline. At the lower of the listed prices, Z15 at $350.05, the LS5 at $272.00, the M22 four-speed at $243.95 and the ZL2 hood at $128.00 come to $994.00 in options for 1972. The same four lines in 1971 listed at $357.05, $279.10, $237.60 and $158.00, or $1,031.75. The fully equipped big-block Chevelle got slightly cheaper to option in 1972, and fewer people bought it anyway. Whatever turned buyers away, the option price was not rising to do it.1,2
The El Camino carried the Super Sport too, and its own volume moved the other way from the SS 454. ChevelleStuff lists 50,359 Malibu sedan pickups for 1972, all V8, against 36,042 in 1971. Z15 could be ordered on the Malibu/Custom El Camino as on the coupe and convertible, but the SS totals are not divided by body, so how many of those pickups wore the SS, or carried the LS5, is unknown. That missing split is a standing caution for anyone pricing a 1972 SS El Camino by an imagined rarity.1,2
Canadian production adds a layer that American totals can hide. Of 21,106 Malibu sport coupes imported from Canada for sale in the United States, ChevelleStuff records that 1,542 had Z15 and 266 had the LS5. Of 2,888 imported base Chevelle sport coupes, 1,151 carried the Heavy Chevy package, roughly four in ten. Those imports matter to anyone authenticating a 1972 SS: a Canadian-built car can be as genuine as a US-built one, and its production is tallied in a separate column.1
The broader market was still buying big engines, just not with a clutch. Line-wide, Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 went into 541,869 cars and the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 into 21,427, against 10,201 wide-ratio M20 four-speeds and 1,513 M22s; Powerglide still accounted for 43,915. Those counts include Monte Carlos where the option applied, so they describe Chevrolet's intermediate market rather than the SS alone. Among rivals, Plymouth's 1972 Satellite catalog advertised a 400 four-barrel V8 as the Road Runner's standard engine, a reminder that Chevrolet's rivals were still selling big-inch intermediates.1
What followed makes 1972 a boundary. ChevelleStuff's guide records that for 1973 the LS5 was dropped, the 454 that remained was rated at 245 net horsepower and could be ordered without the SS for the first time, and Z15 went onto 28,647 cars, including, for that one year only, the station wagon. That makes the 1972 SS 454 the last Chevelle in which the 454 belonged to the Super Sport alone. The 5,333 buyers who paid for it bought the final version of an arrangement that had begun with the 1970 SS 454.3,1
Seen from the order book, 1972 reads less like a funeral than a sorting. The LS5 had lost California and fifteen net horsepower, the M22 four-speed had lost half its buyers, and the Super Sport itself had turned into a package that could sit on a 350. Yet thousands of buyers still chose the 454, the ZL2 hood still went onto 3,659 cars, and the SS badge itself was ordered more often than in 1971. The muscle Chevelle did not vanish in 1972; it was redistributed into cheaper, milder and more common forms, with a few thousand big-blocks still at the top.1,2,3

Identification
- Model and VIN codes
- The source pairs Chevrolet model numbers with 1972 VIN series codes, e.g. 13637 = 1D37x Malibu V8 sport coupe, 13667 = 1D67x convertible, 13680 = 1D80x El Camino.1
Where the sources disagree
RPO Z15 SS installations
ChevelleStuff's two own pages differ by one digit. A second, independently compiled source (Over-Drive Magazine's production-figures fact sheet) corroborates 24,946, so the production row is filled with 24,946 as the better-supported figure; 29,946 stays on record as the other reading rather than being silently dropped. No Chevrolet factory report has been seen directly.
1972 Chevelle total production (excluding Monte Carlo)
Both figures are printed on the same one-page fact sheet: 450,842 is the sheet's own tabulation by series/model/engine, while 649,269 is described there as "the total production according to the reported last VIN of each assembly plant," which the sheet itself flags as not matching its tabulated figures. The tabulated 450,842 is used for the total production row because it is broken out by body style and engine and can be checked against the body-style rows already on record; the VIN-sequence figure is kept here as a conflict rather than discarded.

The VIN decoder runs in your browser and never sends the VIN anywhere. How the factory numbered this year's cars:
Same model year
Also in 1972
- AMC AMX The first year of SAE net ratings and Chrysler-built TorqueFlite automatics. Javelin AMX production rose to 3,220, and the 304 V8 became available.
- AMC Gremlin X and Spirit AMX The first V8 Gremlin: the 304 (150 hp SAE net) in AMC's subcompact. Gremlin X production is not published in any source found.
- AMC Javelin The base model was dropped, so every non-AMX Javelin was an SST. This was the first year of the Pierre Cardin interior and of Chrysler-built automatics.
- Buick Riviera Net ratings only for 1972: 250 hp standard, 260 GS per ROA; 2,171 of 33,728 were GS.
- Buick Skylark Gran Sport, GS and GSX The last A-body GS year before the Colonnade Century; the GSX package, now in many colours, was invoiced on only 44 cars, most of them outside the lower 48 states.
- Chevrolet Chevy II and Nova The source engine table switches to net ratings; SS and Rally Nova offered. Enthusiast-compiled production: 349,733 cars; Super Sport 12,309.
- Chevrolet El Camino SS Last year of the Chevelle-bodied El Camino SS; 50,359 V8 Malibu El Caminos were built, and the SS share is not separately published.
- Dodge Challenger Hardtop only, with a new grille: the R/T gave way to the Challenger Rallye package, and the most powerful engine listed was the 340 four-barrel.
- Dodge Charger The R/T and Super Bee were dropped; the new Rallye package became the performance Charger, and the 440 Six Pack was cancelled after a handful of cars.
- Dodge Dart GTS, Swinger and Demon The Demon's second and final year under that name: 8,773 Demon 340s, with small Canadian and Swiss-market 340 runs counted separately.
- Ford Maverick Grabber The dual-scoop-hood Grabber in its second year as a model; Classic Industries counts 35,347.
- Ford Ranchero GT The Ranchero GT continued on the 1972-76 Ranchero; 12,620 GTs were built, per reference-site counts in the Standard Catalog lineage.
- Ford Thunderbird First year of the sixth-generation Thunderbird; only the whole-line production total was found.
- Ford Torino The new body-on-frame Torino sold 496,645 in 1972; the performance models were the Gran Torino Sport SportsRoof (60,794) and hardtop (31,239), with the 351 Cobra Jet and a Rallye Equipment Group on the option list.
- Mercury Cougar Net ratings arrived, the 429 was gone, and the 351 Cobra Jet became the performance Cougar engine, fitted to 3,560 cars.
- Mercury Montego GT The first year of the fastback-only Montego GT on the new split-wheelbase intermediate, with the Cyclone name reduced to a performance option that only a few dozen buyers took.
- Oldsmobile Cutlass, 4-4-2 and Hurst/Olds The 4-4-2 became a Cutlass option again, engines were rated in SAE net (W-30: 300 hp), and a Hurst/Olds paced the Indianapolis 500.
- Plymouth Barracuda and 'Cuda Hardtops only, single headlamps, four round taillamps, and a 340 four-barrel as the top engine: the 'Cuda carried it as standard.
- Plymouth Duster 340 and 360 In the first net-rating year the Duster 340's 8.5:1 340 was rated 240 net hp with electronic ignition, the Twister became order code A51, and output rose to 15,681 in both compilations.
- Plymouth GTX, Belvedere and Satellite For 1972 the GTX existed only as the 440 four-barrel option on the Road Runner hardtop; Mueller's Muscle Car Source Book counts 672 of them.
- Plymouth Road Runner The hardtop-only Road Runner took a 400 four-barrel as its advertised standard engine, and production fell again.
- Pontiac Firebird and Trans Am A strike-shortened year: 29,951 Firebirds and 1,286 Trans Ams, every one a 455 HO.
- Pontiac GTO The GTO goes back to being an option on the LeMans, with net ratings only; 5,807 were built.
- Pontiac Grand Prix A carryover year with the SJ still offered; production recovered to 91,961.
- Pontiac Tempest and LeMans The GTO becomes a LeMans option, and the LeMans gets WW4 and WW5 performance packages.
