1972 AMC Javelin SST: One Trim, Net Horsepower and a Fashion Designer's Name on the Order Form
The base model was dropped, so every non-AMX Javelin was an SST. This was the first year of the Pierre Cardin interior and of Chrysler-built automatics.
United States · researched through 2026-09-22
For 1972 AMC simplified the Javelin lineup by eliminating the base model outright, leaving the SST as the only Javelin outside the two-seat AMX. The enthusiast engine table counts 22,964 SSTs built that way: 1,477 with the 232 six, 1,137 with the 258, 14,079 with the 304, 5,801 with the 360 and 470 with the 401, a set of engine rows that sums to the total itself. JavelinAMX.com's separately compiled figure, 22,864, differs by exactly 100 cars; this record leads with 22,964 as the figure the source's own engine breakdown supports and treats 22,864 as a likely transcription variant.1,2
Two changes under the skin mattered more than the trim simplification. AMC replaced its Borg-Warner automatic transmissions with Chrysler-built Torque-Command units, sold under three model designations depending on engine: A904 for the sixes, A998 for the 304, and the heavier A727 for the 360 and 401. At the same time, published horsepower and torque figures across the whole industry moved from gross to SAE net measurement, a change that makes every 1972 Javelin engine's advertised numbers look smaller than a comparable 1971 or 1970 engine even where the hardware itself barely changed.2
Under the new net standard, the 232 six was rated at 100 horsepower and the 258 at 110, while the 304 two-barrel made 150. The 360 came in three distinct states of tune: 175 horsepower with a two-barrel carburetor, 195 with a four-barrel and single exhaust, and 220 with a four-barrel and dual exhaust, a wider spread than the two-choice 360 lineup AMC had offered a year earlier. The 401 four-barrel, the biggest engine the Javelin offered, was rated at 255 horsepower and 345 lb-ft of torque, figures that would have looked unremarkable next to 1970's gross-rated 390 despite representing real, and in some cases greater, underlying output.3
The 401 also went to Alabama. Planet Houston AMX's production note states that the 22,964 SST total already includes 100 Alabama State Police Javelins built with the 401, while JavelinAMX.com gives a looser estimate of 100 to 175 cars, and Wikipedia's routing entry cites a combined 1971-72 figure of 132. All three numbers describe the same basic story, a small run of 401-powered Javelins sold to a state police fleet, but they do not agree closely enough to collapse into one count, so this record shows all three with their own attribution rather than picking a winner.1,2,3
The year's best-remembered option had nothing to do with horsepower. The Pierre Cardin interior, named for the French fashion designer, dressed the cabin in Chinese red, silver and plum stripes against a black background and was offered only with five specific exterior colors: Trans Am Red, Snow White, Stardust Silver, Diamond Blue and Wild Plum. It cost $84.95 and identified itself on the trim tag with a 'W' code. Across its full run in both Javelin and AMX, Planet Houston AMX and JavelinAMX.com agree on a combined total of 4,152 cars, a figure this record cannot break down by model year without a source that separates 1972 from the years that followed. Buyers who skipped the Pierre Cardin option still chose from six ordinary interior colors, black, blue, green, a red-and-black combination, tan or white, trimmed in either Wellington vinyl or, on four of those six color codes, a corduroy cloth alternative.1,3,2,1
Beyond the five Pierre Cardin colors, the full 1972 exterior palette ran to sixteen choices, from Snow White and Stardust Silver through Jetset Blue, Admiral Blue, Surfside Turquoise, Grasshopper Green, Hunter Green, Jolly Green, Yuca Tan, Baja Bronze, Cordoba Brown, Canary Yellow, Sparkling Burgundy and an extra-cost Classic Black, alongside the Trans-Am Red and Wild Plum that doubled as Pierre Cardin colors. AMC's own full-line catalog and a separate exterior color chart agree on all sixteen names and codes.
Factory pricing for the six-cylinder SST opened at $2,901, effective from the September 1971 introduction. The Go Package carried over its 1971 structure and pricing, $410 with the 360 or $499 with the 401, and AMC's own catalog lists the performance-oriented options that typically rode alongside it: a V-8 Rally-Pac with oil pressure and ammeter gauges, a combination tachometer and clock, a 140-mph speedometer, a Twin-Grip limited-slip differential required with the 3.91 axle, and a 16:1 quick-ratio manual steering box offered against a 20:1 quick ratio that was itself already standard.1,4
A 1972 Javelin is identifiable at a glance by three specific changes JavelinAMX.com's spotter's guide calls out: an egg-crate grille made up of small rectangles, a chrome grille panel covering the taillights that AMC used only that one year, and a radio antenna relocated to the passenger-side front fender. None of the three changes affected mechanical specification, but together they are enough to date a Javelin to this exact model year without needing to check a VIN or door tag.2
Shipping weight ranged from 2,875 pounds for a six-cylinder SST up to 3,118 for a V8, and the axle-ratio chart shows just how many combinations that range of engines and transmissions produced: the 232 alone offered a 3.08 standard ratio with 3.31 or 3.58 optional depending on transmission, while the 401 with its four-speed manual could be ordered with 3.54 standard and 3.15 or 3.91 optional. AMC's own literature notes that every 1972 engine required at minimum 91-octane fuel, regular-leaded, low-lead or no-lead, a footnote that reflects the wider industry shift toward emissions-driven compression-ratio reductions happening at the same time as the move to net horsepower ratings.1
Added to the AMX's separately recorded 3,220 cars, the Javelin line's combined total for 1972 reaches 26,184, a figure Conceptcarz.com states directly and whose own body-style breakdown reproduces the 22,964 and 3,220 figures exactly, meaning it restates rather than independently confirms the same underlying lineage. A one-trim, one-body-style Javelin selling nearly 23,000 SSTs on its own, in a model year defined as much by a fashion designer's interior and an industry-wide measurement-standard change as by any single engine or option, closes out the run this record's own 1971 Trans-Am chapter had opened the year before.5
