Cautions for this scheme
- Decoded by rule from Ford Car Shop Manual identification tables. A decode does not prove the car is what its VIN says.
- The engine letter records the engine the car was built with. It is not proof that the engine now in the car is original.
- The door certification label's body, color, trim, date, DSO, axle and transmission codes are not part of the VIN and are not decoded here.
- Cyclone Spoiler, Eliminator, Cobra Jet, Super Cobra Jet and similar identities cannot be established from the VIN alone.
- The same VIN is also offered to the Ford Division 1970s pack and to the 1960s packs; the Lincoln-Mercury reading applies when the car is a Mercury or Lincoln.
- 1975–1976 Lincoln-Mercury VINs are decoded by the separate 1975–1976 pack (mercury-1974-1979); 1974 and 1977–1979 are not covered because no factory table was read for those years. Canadian Meteor codes are not published.
