1971 Mercury Cyclone
The final Cyclone year: production fell to a few thousand across Cyclone, Cyclone GT and Cyclone Spoiler.
United States · researched through 2026-09-28
1971 was the final year for the Cyclone name, and production fell sharply from the year before: Wikipedia's relay of Holder and Kunz's Ford Muscle gives 444 base Cyclones, 2,287 Cyclone GTs, and 353 Cyclone Spoilers, and conceptcarz's own spec page independently repeats the identical three-way split, summing them to 3,084 Montego Cyclones in all. Within that split, the GT alone accounts for well over five times the base Cyclone's count and roughly six and a half times the Spoiler's, so whatever buyers wanted from the nameplate in its last year, they overwhelmingly wanted the GT rather than either the plainer base car or the more expensive Spoiler. No compilation or registry figure was found to test either relay against, and Over-Drive Magazine's own Mercury mid-size fact sheets, used to cross-check most other years in this subject, stop at 1970, so this final year has no equivalent fact-sheet source to check the Wikipedia and conceptcarz figures against each other beyond their own agreement.1,2
conceptcarz separately lists 1971 Cyclone prices running from $3,370 to $3,800, but without labeling which figure belongs to which of the three models; this record cannot assign a specific price to the base Cyclone, the GT, or the Spoiler individually as a result, and carries only the range as published. No factory invoice, dealer order guide, or a second price list was found to break that range down by model.2
One further claim was found but not tabulated: that only 74 of the 1971 Cyclone Spoilers combined the 429 Cobra Jet with the close-ratio 4-speed manual. It comes from a sale-listing article attributing the figure to a Marti report run for a single car rather than to any published production breakdown covering the whole model, so this record carries it only as an unpublished lead rather than as a confirmed engine/transmission split of the 353 Spoilers. If the 74-car figure were confirmed, it would imply the great majority of Spoilers were ordered with some other combination of engine and transmission, but this record does not draw that inference from an unpublished, single-car-sourced claim.1
Lincoln-Mercury's own 1971 brochures settle the drivetrain question that the secondary sources leave open. The 1971 Mercury Prestige brochure's Major Specifications for the Montego Cyclone, Cyclone GT and Cyclone Spoiler list three V-8 engines: a 351-2V rated at 240 horsepower at 4,600 rpm and 350 lb-ft at 2,600 rpm on a 9.0:1 compression ratio, a 351-4V rated at 285 horsepower at 5,400 rpm and 370 lb-ft at 3,400 rpm on 10.7:1, and a 429 CJ rated at 370 horsepower at 5,400 rpm and 450 lb-ft at 3,400 rpm on 11.3:1. The brochure does not say whether these ratings are gross or net, so this record carries them as published nominal figures and adds no basis of its own. The 351-2V is standard only on the Cyclone GT and runs on regular fuel, with a footnote allowing 91-octane; the 351-4V is standard on the Cyclone and the Cyclone Spoiler; and the 429 CJ is optional on all three.
The transmission assignments follow the same pattern of one standard choice per model with the rest at extra cost. The Prestige brochure states that the Select-Shift automatic is standard on the Cyclone GT and optional on the Cyclone and the Cyclone Spoiler, while the 4-speed manual with a Hurst Shifter is standard in the Cyclone and the Cyclone Spoiler and optional in the Cyclone GT only when it is ordered with the 351-4V or the 429 CJ engine. The same note says the 3-speed manual is not available on any of the three models. The Cyclone Spoiler also lists a Traction-Lok differential with a 3.25:1 axle as standard equipment; the brochures print no axle ratio for the Cyclone or the Cyclone GT, and this record leaves those blank. The 429 CJ carries further conditions: power brakes with front discs are required when it is ordered, and a footnote offers a Ram-Air option with a functional hood scoop at extra cost.
The three models are separated as much by equipment as by engine. All three list a performance hood with an integral scoop, dual racing mirrors with a remote-control left-hand mirror, and Cyclone running lights as standard. The Cyclone GT adds concealed headlamps, deluxe wheel covers and hi-back bucket seats, and the Prestige brochure lists a Tone on Tone lower body paint treatment for it that the Full Line brochure's shorter list omits. The Cyclone Spoiler adds a front spoiler under the bumper, a rear deck spoiler, Spoiler tape stripes, hubcaps with bright trim rings, and G70x14 belted tires with raised letters. The base Cyclone is the plainest of the three, with dual pod taillamps, a black painted lower back panel and an all-vinyl bench seat. The brochures give one wording difference within the Cyclone's own equipment: its F70x14 standard tires are called traction tires on two pages and belted tires with raised white letters on another, and both wordings are recorded as a conflict rather than resolved.
The interiors are described by material and color rather than by trim code. The Prestige brochure gives the Cyclone GT and the Cyclone Spoiler Comfortweave vinyl hi-back bucket seats, white as standard and black, medium blue, medium green, medium ginger or vermillion as alternatives, with Houndstooth check cloth-and-vinyl available at extra cost in the same colors. The base Cyclone has an all-vinyl bench seat in black or light gray gold, and its optional bucket seats come in Houndstooth Check cloth-and-vinyl at extra cost or Comfortweave vinyl at no extra cost, in black or medium blue only. A console is listed as optional, and on the Cyclone only with the bucket seats. The options chart adds the equipment a buyer could specify: a handling suspension package, Traction-Lok, trailer towing, air conditioning, power windows, a vinyl roof, an AM/FM stereo radio and a courtesy light group, among others, with each row marked standard, optional or not available for each of the three models.
Several things the brochures do not publish remain empty in this record on purpose. Neither brochure prints a price for the Cyclone models or for any option, so prices are null and the unlabeled $3,370 to $3,800 range relayed by conceptcarz stays the only price evidence. No exterior color chart or paint names appear on the pages read, so the paint list is empty. No option or interior trim codes are printed, and the brochures give no production count by engine, transmission or option, so the 444, 2,287 and 353 model totals remain the only production figures and the 74-car Spoiler claim remains an unpublished lead. The brochures are marketing material, so their equipment lists describe what Lincoln-Mercury advertised rather than what a given car was built with. A dealer order guide, a Marti report or a factory production report would be needed to fill the remaining gaps.2

The numbers
1971 Mercury Cyclone — The final Cyclone year: production fell to a few thousand across Cyclone, Cyclone GT and Cyclone Spoiler.
Coverage: Partial — researched sections are shown; missing ones are not yet sourced. Researched through 2026-09-28.
Every figure is labeled with how sure we are. Reported means a manufacturer, registry, or reference figure we cite but have not reconciled against factory records ourselves. Disputed means credible sources disagree and both are shown. Rows are separately scoped; don't add them together unless the note says they make up a total.
Key facts
- Cyclone Spoiler 1971: 353, per the Holder and Kunz figures relayed by Wikipedia.1
- conceptcarz repeats the 444 / 2,287 / 353 split (3,084 Montego Cyclones in all) and lists 1971 Cyclone prices from $3,370 to $3,800 without labelling the models.2
- Lincoln-Mercury's 1971 brochures list the 351-4V V-8 (285 hp at 5,400 rpm) as standard on the Cyclone and Cyclone Spoiler, the 351-2V V-8 (240 hp at 4,600 rpm) as standard on the Cyclone GT, and the 429 CJ V-8 (370 hp at 5,400 rpm) as optional on all three.

Rows are separately scoped; do not add them. The conceptcarz total row states the Cyclone-line total, which equals the sum of the series rows (same lineage).
Single tertiary relay; Over-Drive Magazine Mercury mid-size fact sheets stop at 1970. A Mercury production report or the Holder and Kunz book itself would verify these.
Searched 2026-09-29: conceptcarz spec pages (re-read), Over-Drive Magazine tables and Wikipedia already cited; OpenLibrary search-inside of Heasley's Production Figure Book returned nothing for Mercury mid-size totals.

Where the sources disagree
Standard tires on the Cyclone (base model)
- F70x14 traction tires (Full Line brochure p. 12 and Prestige brochure p. 37 tires note)
- F70x14 belted tires with raised white letters (Prestige brochure p. 35 standard equipment list)
Both wordings are kept as printed. The size, F70x14, agrees across the brochure pages; only the tire description differs. The specification row for Cyclone standard tires quotes both descriptions rather than choosing one.
