The Cougar Club of America's Marti-derived production page gives 72,365 Cougars for 1970, this record's own overview states: 49,479 standard hardtops (65A), 18,567 XR-7 hardtops (65B), 2,322 standard convertibles (76A) and 1,997 XR-7 convertibles (76B), with the bench-seat 65C hardtop no longer appearing. The Eliminator's standard engine became the 351 Cleveland four-barrel at 300 hp gross, with the Boss 302 and 428 Cobra Jet optional; Over-Drive Magazine notes the Boss 302 was available only with the Eliminator option, and the club page records 2,268 Eliminators, the key fact this record leads with.1,2

This record's own conflicts note carries several disputed totals side by side: 72,365 against Wikipedia's 72,343; the standard hardtop's 49,479 against Over-Drive's 47,211 coupes, a gap the treatment states equals the Eliminator count exactly, since Over-Drive's own production table separately notes Eliminator production is included in the 65A figure, meaning its 47,211 caption appears to count non-Eliminator coupes only; and the XR-7 hardtop and convertible rows, 18,567 and 1,997 in the club table against 18,565 and 1,977 in Over-Drive's own table, each summing to their respective 72,365 and 72,343 totals rather than mixing.3,2,4

The Eliminator count itself carries a smaller dispute: 2,268 in the club and Over-Drive production tables against 2,267 in a separate rarity table, and this record's own unpublished leads section holds a registry volunteer's forum post, citing Marti reports, stating the figure was corrected from 2,267 to 2,268 in 2016, a claim not used as a formal source since it circulates only in the forum. The same forum post gives an unused Eliminator breakdown by engine (1,425 351C-4V, 469 Boss 302, 374 428 CJ including 127 Drag-Pack SCJ) and by paint, and this record's own production notes independently carry the 469 Boss 302 figure from a separate rarity table, calling the forum post's matching number consistent but not an independent published lineage.5

Hertz again bought Eliminators for its Rent-A-Racer program, a figure this record's own conflicts note gives as 101 per Over-Drive Magazine against 100 per Wikipedia with neither chosen, and a new houndstooth cloth-and-vinyl trim styled by Pauline Trigere joined the options list at $32.40. Four engines are documented: the 351 two-barrel at 250 hp, the 351 Cleveland four-barrel at 300 hp standard on Eliminator, the Boss 302 at 290 hp, restricted to the Eliminator and the four-speed manual only, and the 428 Cobra Jet at 335 hp with or without Ram Air; 2,243 Cougars of every kind carried the four-speed manual that year.2,6,5

This record documents four 1970 base prices: $2,917 for the 65A hardtop, $3,264 for the 76A convertible, $3,201 for the 65B XR-7 hardtop and $3,465 for the 76B XR-7 convertible, alongside an Eliminator option list price of $129.60, a Drag-Pack at $207.30 and Ram-Air induction at $64.80. This record's own conflicts note also carries two competing shipping-weight tables from Over-Drive Magazine itself, neither stating its weighing basis, and three names for a single 1970 paint code: Competition Orange from the Eliminator registry, Competition Red from the fact sheet's own paint table, and Calypso Coral from the VIN decoder.4,2,7,8

What the record documents in full is the last first-generation year, carrying more internally disputed figures than resolved ones: a 72,365-car total whose gap from Wikipedia's count is fully explained by a 22-car body-style split, an Eliminator run whose 2,268-car figure this record's own sources dispute by exactly one car, a Hertz fleet count unresolved between 100 and 101, and a single paint code carrying three different published names across three different sources.1

Coverage: Partial — researched sections are shown; missing ones are not yet sourced. Researched through 2026-09-22.

Every figure is labeled with how sure we are. Reported means a manufacturer, registry, or reference figure we cite but have not reconciled against factory records ourselves. Disputed means credible sources disagree and both are shown. Rows are separately scoped; don't add them together unless the note says they make up a total.

Where the sources disagree

1970 total production

  • 72,3651
  • 72,3433

The Marti-derived club figure leads because its body rows sum to it.

1970 standard hardtop production

  • 49,479 (65A)1
  • 47,211 coupes2
  • 65A 49,479, Eliminators included4

Both shown; the difference (2,268) equals the Eliminator count. Over-Drive's own production table gives 65A as 49,479 and notes that Eliminator production is included in the 65A figure, so its 47,211 caption appears to count non-Eliminator coupes only.

1970 Hertz Eliminators

  • 1012
  • 1003

Both shown; no value is chosen.

1970 XR-7 hardtop and convertible production

  • XR-7 hardtop 18,567; XR-7 convertible 1,9971,5
  • XR-7 hardtop 18,565; XR-7 convertible 1,9774,2

The club rows stay in the table because they sum to 72,365; the Over-Drive rows sum to its 72,343 total (Wikipedia's figure).

1970 Eliminator production

  • 2,2681,4
  • 2,2675

2,268 stays in the table; a registry volunteer's forum post (unpublished lead) says the count was corrected from 2,267 to 2,268 in 2016.

1970 paint code 1 name

  • Competition Orange (Eliminator colour)7
  • Competition Red2
  • Calypso Coral (Comp. Orange)8

All three names shown.

1970 shipping weights

  • coupe 3,440; XR-7 3,459; convertible 3,573; XR-7 convertible 3,592; Eliminator 3,482 lb2
  • 65A 3,307; 65B 3,333; 76A 3,404; 76B 3,430 lb4

Both sets come from Over-Drive Magazine and neither states its weight basis; both are shown.

  • Ford Ranchero GT The Torino-based Ranchero GT could take the 429 Cobra Jet and Super Cobra Jet; reference counts give 3,905 GTs, while Barn Finds rounds the GT figure to about 3,600 of 21,640 Rancheros.

  • Plymouth Barracuda and 'Cuda The E-body redesign split the line into Barracuda, Gran Coupe, and 'Cuda hardtops and convertibles, put every Chrysler performance engine through the 426 Hemi on the order form, and added the one-year AAR 'Cuda for Trans-Am homologation.
  • Plymouth Duster 340 and 360 Plymouth's new Valiant-based fastback coupe arrived with a 275 hp 340 performance model priced at $2,547; the Standard Catalog lineage counts 24,817 Duster 340s among 217,192 Dusters.
  • Plymouth GTX, Belvedere and Satellite Now hardtop-only, the GTX fell to 7,748 cars while its 440 Six Barrel option cost just $119.
  • Plymouth Road Runner Production halved from 1969, the 440 Six Barrel became a regular option, and the winged Superbird was built as a Road Runner hardtop to put Plymouth back on NASCAR superspeedways.
  • Pontiac Firebird and Trans Am A late-arriving, coupe-only second generation: 48,739 Firebirds, 3,196 of them Trans Ams, and 88 Ram Air IVs.
  • Pontiac GTO A new Endura nose, a 455 added beside the three 400s, and GTO production falling to 40,149.
