Wikipedia's own account, this record's overview states, records that for 1991 a 200-horsepower version of the 302 (5.0-litre) Windsor V8 was introduced in the Cougar, and that the 1992 25th Anniversary cars were all green with a tan interior. Total 1992 production is given as 46,928 cars from Wikipedia alone, this record's own dek and production table agree, with this record's own note explaining that this figure rests on a single tertiary source whose underlying record is not stated. Two further rows document the 25th Anniversary Cougar itself, in Tourmaline Green: a confirmed total of 4,800 cars credited to a recent Marti report, with a note that most were V6 cars and that the 1992 model page instead calls the total an estimate of about 5,000, and a separate announced-run row of 5,000 cars, with a note that Ford announced this figure in late 1991 and that it is not a production count; this record's own key facts section is empty for the year.1,2

This record's own conflicts section documents the 1992 total-production disagreement directly: AEROCATS gives 46,982 against Wikipedia's 46,928, a gap of just 54 cars this record's own note on the AEROCATS row calls a possible transposition, and this record's own treatment keeps both, retaining the Wikipedia figure in the existing total row while carrying the AEROCATS figure as its own separate row, noting that neither source names its underlying record for the total.2,1

Two engines are documented for 1992, this record's own engine table shows: a 3.8-litre (232 cubic-inch) V6 with sequential multi-port fuel injection, standard on the LS and rated 140 horsepower at 3,800 rpm with 215 lb-ft of torque at 2,400 rpm, and a 5.0-litre (302 cubic-inch) V8 with sequential multi-port fuel injection, optional on the LS and standard on the XR7, rated 200 horsepower at 4,000 rpm with 275 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm. This record's own transmissions section is left entirely empty for the year.2

This record's own options section itemizes 35 entries across LS and XR7: the 5.0-litre V8 appears here again as its own standalone option, power four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock braking remain optional on the LS and standard on the XR7, a Luxury Trim Option for the LS only now specifies 24-ounce carpeting, a Luxury Lamp Group carries a note that it is deleted when the power moonroof is ordered, and the keyless entry system's own description now adds an autolock feature on the LS. Five Preferred Equipment Packages are documented by code, 260A, 262A and 263A for the LS and 265A and 266A for the XR7, the LS entry-level code renumbered from 261A the prior two years to 260A.2

This record's own paint table carries 17 colour entries for 1992: 12 clearcoat colours, including Tourmaline Green reserved for the 25th Anniversary model only, and 5 XR7 monochromatic colours, two of them, Mocha Frost Clearcoat and Silver Metallic Clearcoat, carrying the source's own "late availability" note. Twelve interior descriptions are carried by trim code, this record's own interiors section shows: six first-character seat-type codes, including UltraSuede articulated buckets reserved for the 25th Anniversary model only, and six second-character colour codes, including Tan reserved for the 25th Anniversary model only alongside Titanium, Crystal Blue, Currant Red, Mocha and Ebony.2

This record's own specifications section carries nine 1992 figures: a 113.0-inch wheelbase, a 199.9-inch overall length, a 72.7-inch overall width, a 52.7-inch overall height, 18.0 gallons of fuel capacity, 15.2 cubic feet of cargo capacity, curb weights of 3,587 pounds for the LS, 3,753 for the V8-equipped LS and 3,800 for the XR7, 10.8-inch front discs against 9.8-inch rear drums or 10.0-inch rear discs with anti-lock, and an engine summary repeating both ratings by trim. This record carries no 1992 price at all, its own price notes explaining the same removed J.D. Power figure described for other years, and no performance figures, identification codes or unpublished leads survive in their respective sections either.2

The numbers

1992 Mercury Cougar — Outside the muscle focus: 46,928 Cougars for 1992 per Wikipedia's table.

Coverage: Partial — researched sections are shown; missing ones are not yet sourced. Researched through 2026-09-22.

Every figure is labeled with how sure we are. Reported means a manufacturer, registry, or reference figure we cite but have not reconciled against factory records ourselves. Disputed means credible sources disagree and both are shown. Rows are separately scoped; don't add them together unless the note says they make up a total.

Prices when new *

No price is shown here. One was, until 2026-09-24: a figure from J.D. Power's live valuation pages, pulled from every page on this site because those pages can change without our knowing and we have no way to check them independently. We haven't found a source we can stand behind to put in its place yet. A price for this car elsewhere that looks suspiciously exact may be quoting that same J.D. Power figure rather than confirming it — several sites we checked turned out to be doing exactly that, without saying so.
