1971 Chevrolet Chevelle SS: Two Horsepower Numbers and the LS5 Left Standing

A single RPO Z15 SS package now spanned small- and big-block V8s; 9,502 of 19,293 SS cars carried the LS5 454, and Chevrolet began printing net ratings beside gross.

Chevrolet's September 1970 engine table for the Chevelle prints two horsepower figures beside each engine. The LS5 454 reads 365 gross and 285 net; the LS3 402 reads 300 gross and 260 net. Neither column corrects the other. They are ratings taken under different conventions, and ChevelleStuff notes that GM published both for 1971 in preparation for net ratings in 1972. For the Chevelle SS that sheet marks a hinge. The car arrived for 1971 speaking two horsepower languages at once, and within a year it would speak only the one that produced the smaller numbers.1

The year before had been the loudest in the Chevelle's life. For 1970 Chevrolet split the Super Sport into RPO Z25 SS 396 and RPO Z15 SS 454, and its final reports, as ChevelleStuff tabulates them, count 53,599 Z25 cars and 8,773 Z15 cars, with 4,475 of the SS 454s carrying the LS6 at 450 gross horsepower. For 1971 the Z25 package and its 396 badge were gone. Only Z15 remained, and it no longer named an engine at all. ChevelleStuff's identification guide calls it "more of a dress-up option" that could be ordered with any optional V8 and any optional transmission.2,3

The production figures show what buyers did with that freedom. The reference tabulation records 19,293 Z15 SS installations across the Malibu sport coupe, the convertible and the Malibu/Custom El Camino, and 9,502 of those cars carried SS 454 equipment with the LS5. That is 49 percent of all SS cars choosing the big-block when a small-block could now wear the same badge. The year's irony sits in the comparison with 1970: total Super Sport volume fell far below the 53,599 Z25 cars of the year before, yet the 9,502 SS 454s of 1971 outnumbered the 8,773 SS 454s built in 1970.1,2

On the order form the path to a 454 Chevelle was a stack of separate lines. Z15 SS equipment listed at $357.05 and the LS5 engine at $279.10 more. The heavy-duty close-ratio M22 four-speed, restricted to the LS5, cost $237.60 and went into 3,035 cars; the ZL2 special ducted hood, which required both the SS and the LS5, cost $158.00 and went into 4,079. Against 9,502 LS5 installations, those counts suggest that roughly four in ten SS 454s got the ducted hood and about a third the M22, with the caveat ChevelleStuff attaches to its option counts: some options could also apply to Monte Carlos.1,1

Between the small-blocks and the 454 sat the LS3, a 402-cubic-inch big-block rated at 300 gross and 260 net horsepower, with 400 lb-ft gross at 3,200 rpm. At $172.75 it cost about a hundred dollars less than the LS5, and the option report counts 17,656 of them, a figure that includes installations in cars without the SS. It was the quiet middle of the lineup: more engine than any 350, but not eligible for the ZL2 hood in 1971, which the option list ties to the SS and the LS5. A 1971 Super Sport buyer could therefore pick a big-block without buying the biggest one, although the report does not say how many SS cars took the LS3.1

The engine missing from those counts is the famous one. Chevrolet's own 1971 Chevelle information kit lists an LS6 454 at 425 gross and 325 net horsepower, and its January 1971 power-team pages still carry it. Yet on the March 1, 1971 price schedule the LS6 line reads "Will Advise" instead of a price, and the sales-facing power-team page omits the engine. ChevelleStuff's option report lists no LS6 installations at all. A listed engine with no price and no production count is a plan, not a delivered car, and it stays a plan until build records for a specific car say otherwise.1

Chevrolet also worked the other end of the market. The 1971 tabulation records 6,727 standard Chevelles, not Malibus, ordered with RPO YF3, the Heavy Chevy package, at $142.20, less than half the price of Z15. Further down the performance ladder the L48 350, rated at 270 gross and 175 net horsepower, went into 78,711 cars, and the L65 350 into 119,379. The Super Sport was no longer the only place to buy a Chevelle with a performance name on it, and the numbers show Chevrolet spreading its performance image across cheaper cars rather than concentrating it in one fearsome package.1,1

Rivals were making the same two-column confession. Pontiac's GTO specifications dated September 9, 1970 list the standard 400 at 300 gross and 255 net horsepower and the 455 HO at 335 gross and 310 net. Set beside the LS5's 365 and 285, the ranking depends on the column: the Chevelle's 454 leads on gross, the Pontiac's 455 HO on net. That is not a trick of the figures but the whole lesson of 1971. Engines were being described under two conventions at once, and any head-to-head comparison has to name its column before it names a winner.4

The line-wide order book shows how Chevelles of every kind were being driven. Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 went into 402,488 cars and the heavier Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 into 21,333, while the wide-ratio M20 four-speed accounted for 9,786 and the close-ratio M22 for 3,035. Positraction was fitted to 33,994 cars and the F41 special performance suspension to 16,431; the D88 sport stripes, included with the SS, appear on 13,382. These totals cover ordinary Chevelles too, and Monte Carlos where the option applied, so they describe the market rather than the SS alone. In that market a clutch pedal had become a specialist's choice.1

The Monte Carlo is the reminder that Chevrolet's 454 had more than one home. RPO Z20, the Monte Carlo SS 454, went into 1,919 cars in 1971 and is counted separately from the Chevelle Super Sport. Its presence explains why ChevelleStuff warns that some shared option counts may include Monte Carlos. For the Chevelle itself, the clean figures are the ones tied to the SS: 19,293 Z15 installations and 9,502 SS 454s, both from the site's production notes, which also record discrepancies between references for Canadian-built sport coupes sold in the United States.1

The 1971 split turned out to be a way station. For 1972 Chevrolet dropped the gross column and advertised net ratings only; the LS5 was listed at 270 net horsepower, marked not available in California, and the SS 454 count fell to 5,333. By 1973 ChevelleStuff's guide shows the LS5 gone and the remaining 454 rated 245 net. The 1971 Chevelle SS, with 9,502 LS5s and a factory sheet that still admitted what its engines made under the old rules, is the one Super Sport year whose big-block Chevrolet rated in both languages, and one in which the 454 went into nearly half of all Super Sports.5,3,1
