Cautions for this scheme
- A decode reads what Chrysler's own identification bulletins say each character means. It does not prove the car is original, correct, or the car the plate was made for. The engine letter records the engine the car was invoiced with, not proof that the engine in it now is that engine.
- Paint, trim, option and scheduled-build codes are not in the serial number. They are on the separate body information plate (fender tag) and, for 1967 Dodge, the owner Certicard; this pack does not decode either.
- Coverage is uneven by division. The 1966 codes come from the Chrysler-Plymouth bulletin and are scoped to Plymouth, Chrysler and Imperial car lines; the 1967 codes come from the Dodge bulletin and are scoped to Dodge car lines. A 1966 Dodge or a 1967 Plymouth, Chrysler or Imperial decodes only its year and plant here, because no factory bulletin for those has been sourced.
- The field layout is the same as 1968 onward except that the plant is a digit, not a letter. The model-year digit repeats each decade (6 and 7 also mean 1976 and 1977 in Chrysler's later 13-character VINs); a numeric plant digit is what marks a 1966–1967 number.
- The 1966 bulletin lists H as '426 Cubic Inch Displacement' without calling it a Hemi, and lists no separate high-performance 383 or 440; this pack repeats the bulletin rather than adding detail it does not give.
