The 383 Arrives, Uncounted by Body

The restyled 1967 Dart GT offered a 235 hp 273 four-barrel and, for the first time, a 280 hp 383; Over-Drive counts 437 383-engined cars within 38,200 GT hardtops and convertibles.

The 1967 Dart was all new on a 111-inch wheelbase, and Dodge did not break out GT production by body style, so Over-Drive's fact sheet counts 38,200 hardtops and convertibles together, a figure that includes six-cylinder as well as V8 GTs rather than isolating the performance cars. The GT's top small-block remained the 273 four-barrel at 10.5:1 compression, rated 235 hp at 5,200 rpm, while a new 383 four-barrel option, rated 280 hp at 4,200 rpm and 400 lb-ft at 2,400 rpm, joined the lineup; the fact sheet's own "Five Fast Facts" state plainly that no Hemi was ever allowed in the Dart.1

The 383's own production count is disputed within the same publisher's material: the fact sheet's narrative text states 437 were produced, while a separate production-table note from the same source instead gives 457, explicitly describing hardtop and convertible sales combined; since both figures come from Over-Drive and neither names an underlying factory record, this record shows both as disputed rather than picking one. The fact sheet's own text also refers to the 383 car as "GTS" in places, though GTS was not actually adopted as a Dart designation until 1968; this record treats that as the source's own anachronistic wording rather than evidence of an early GTS badge in 1967.1,2

Per the fact sheet, only the 383-equipped Dart received dual exhausts as standard, a detail that ties the car's exhaust configuration specifically to the big-block option rather than to GT trim generally. The factory AMA specification sheet lists the 273 four-barrel as available across the CL2 series and the 383 as "Opt GT Only," confirming that the big engine could not be ordered on a plain Dart outside the GT trim; both engines carry a corrected SAE gross rating on the AMA sheet matching the fact sheet's own published figures.1,3

The four-speed manual, available only with V8 engines, ran $179, and automatic with a V8 cost $147. Among GT-specific options, a console cost $38, a tachometer paired with the console cost another $38, Rallye suspension added $11, and power front disc brakes ran $54; simulated "Mag" wheel covers, restricted to GTs, cost $43. Base prices split by engine ran $2,499 for the six-cylinder hardtop up to $2,860 for the V8 convertible, with air conditioning, the single most expensive named option, at $319.1,2

Twenty-two exterior colors were charted for the year, from Mauve and Bright Blue through Medium Tan and Gold. Standard tires on V8 cars ran 7.00 x 13, with 6.95 x 14 or D70 x 14 optional on GTs with the heavy-duty suspension, and shipping weight for the V8 GT ran 2,930 lb for the hardtop and 3,030 lb for the convertible. One further source, a February 1967 Car Craft road test of the Dart GTS 383, was found but not read in this pass, since it survives only as an image PDF that could not be rendered; this record carries no performance figures for 1967 as a result, leaving that section of the record empty rather than filled with an unread source's claims.1,2

Coverage: Partial — researched sections are shown; missing ones are not yet sourced. Researched through 2026-09-23.

Every figure is labeled with how sure we are. Reported means a manufacturer, registry, or reference figure we cite but have not reconciled against factory records ourselves. Disputed means credible sources disagree and both are shown. Rows are separately scoped; don't add them together unless the note says they make up a total.
