1967 Dodge Coronet R/T: Dodge's First R/T, With a Hemi Price That Doesn't Match and a Production Total That Doesn't Either
Dodge's first R/T: a Coronet hardtop or convertible with the 440 Magnum standard and the 426 Hemi as a special-order option; its production total is published two ways.
United States · researched through 2026-09-23
The Coronet R/T introduced Dodge's R/T badge for the first time in 1967, sold as a hardtop or convertible with the 440 Magnum standard, rated 375 horsepower at 4,600 rpm and 480 lb-ft at 3,200 rpm, backed by either a four-speed manual or TorqueFlite automatic. AMA's own specification sheet confirms TorqueFlite as standard on the R/T and states plainly that the ordinary three-speed manual was not available on the car at all, meaning every 1967 Coronet R/T left the factory with either the four-speed or the automatic, never the base transmission other Coronets could still be ordered with.1,2
Exactly how many 1967 Coronet R/Ts Dodge built depends on which reference is consulted. Gunnell's two books and Over-Drive's own production table all agree on 10,181, including 628 convertibles; Mueller's Muscle Car Source Book and Clay Fees's The Age of the Muscle Car instead give 10,109, with Fees further breaking that total down to 628 convertibles and 238 Hemi-powered cars; and Langworth's older buyer's guide rounds to an estimated 10,000. None of the sources names the underlying factory record, and the record shows all three figures rather than picking one, though it notes that many popular references simply repeat the 10,181 figure without independent verification.1,3,4,5,6
The Hemi's own price as a special-order R/T option is disputed too, and the two figures differ by a wide margin: John Gunnell's Standard Guide to American Muscle Cars states $907.60, while Over-Drive's own 1967 fact sheet lists it at just $457 in the Coronet R/T, separately noting $712 for the same engine in a Dodge Charger. Neither source explains whether its figure is the option's full price or an increment layered on top of the standard 440, which would help explain the gap, so both numbers are kept on record. Whatever the true price, the engine itself was rare: Fees credits only 238 of the year's roughly 10,000-plus R/Ts with the Hemi, meaning well under three percent of Coronet R/T buyers paid for the top engine.7,6,4
AMA's own weight tables put a 440-automatic R/T hardtop at 3,685 pounds curb weight and 3,545 pounds shipping, with the convertible estimated slightly heavier at 3,760 pounds curb, and choosing the four-speed manual over the automatic added another 82 pounds to a 440-equipped car. Every R/T rode on 7.75x14 Red Streak nylon tires as standard, measuring 203.0 inches long and 75.3 inches wide regardless of body style, with the hardtop standing 54.0 inches tall against the convertible's 54.1. Set against the wider Coronet line, the R/T was a small slice of a much bigger production run: Over-Drive's own figures show 92,500 Coronet 440s, 29,300 Coronet 500s, and 27,800 Coronet Deluxes built that year, with a full mid-size-line total of 199,769 once the separate first-generation Charger and Charger 500's 15,788 units are included.2,6
Two further claims circulate without confirmation in this record's own sources: a snippet from Leffingwell's Wide-Open Muscle states that 627 of the 10,181 R/Ts were 440 Magnum convertibles, a figure consistent with the agreed 628 convertible count if exactly one of those convertibles carried the Hemi instead, though that connection is not established anywhere. A separate secondary website claims just two 1967 Coronet R/T Hemi convertibles were built, one with a manual transmission and one automatic; both leads are held as unconfirmed rather than folded into the reported production figures above, which remain the 628 convertibles and 238 Hemi cars this record can actually cite.1,4

Coverage: Partial — researched sections are shown; missing ones are not yet sourced. Researched through 2026-09-23.
Every figure is labeled with how sure we are. Reported means a manufacturer, registry, or reference figure we cite but have not reconciled against factory records ourselves. Disputed means credible sources disagree and both are shown. Rows are separately scoped; don't add them together unless the note says they make up a total.
