Cautions for this scheme

  • Decoded from Ford's own VIN code submissions to NHTSA (1994-2002 model years). A decode shows what the VIN says, not what the car is; it is not authentication.
  • Model years 1992 and 1993 are not covered: NHTSA's database holds no Ford submission listing passenger-car subject lines for them.
  • For 1994 only the April 1994 Revision No. 2 is in NHTSA's database; it carries the line and engine pages but not the WMI, restraint, position-5 or plant pages, so for a 1994 VIN those positions show unknown code.
  • Position 5 is P for a Ford-make car and M for Lincoln or Mercury (T for imported or non-Ford-built cars); positions 6-7 are the line/series/body code, read against positions 1-5.
  • Only subject lines (Thunderbird, Cougar, Capri, Mark VIII, Taurus SHO) and Mustang (for hand-off) are tabulated; other line codes show as unknown code. The engine tables are the full passenger-car tables of each year. Ford's tables tie no engine to the Thunderbird or the Taurus SHO by footnote; the SHO engines (Yamaha 3.0L, 3.2L, 3.4L) and the 3.8L supercharged V-6 are listed as the tables print them.
  • The Taurus SHO is not listed for 2000; line code 54 then means the Taurus SE-4 Valve. The Thunderbird is absent from 1998 through 2001, the Mark VIII from 1999, the Capri from 1995 and the Mercury Marauder from every year in this range.
  • Where Ford issued several revisions for a year, the latest revision read is followed and the differences are listed as conflicts.

Where the sources disagree

  • Revision No. 2 of the 1995 package (June 20, 1994) revised engine U to 140 hp and V to 260-290 hp; Revision No. 3 (April 25, 1995) reprints U as 130-140 and V as 280 without marking a change.
  • The initial 1996 package lists the Cobra as a nameplate on codes 42 and 45 and engine C 5.8L for the Cobra R; Revision No. 1 (Jan. 30, 1996) gives the Cobra its own codes 46 and 47, deletes the Cobra R and engine C, and deletes the Thunderbird SVT nameplate.
  • The Mustang GT engine X is printed without a plant suffix in 1997, as "SOHC (R)" (Romeo) in 1998 and as "SOHC (W)" (Windsor) in 1999-2001.
  • Cougar code 62 reads series "V6" (identical to 61) in the 2000 tables and "High Output V6" from 2001.
  • Revisions No. 1-2 of the 2002 package list A 3.9L TBD, V 260-305, W 190-210, X 225 and engine G 2.5L; Revision No. 3 (Nov. 27, 2001) changes these to 252, 275, 220-235 and 260 hp and drops G without mentioning it in the letter.
  • The 1999 Revision No. 2 (Aug. 1998) prints W 200-220, V 275-320 and X 260; the 2000 tables print W 190-210, V 260-305 and X 225.
