For 1965 the Catalina 2+2 had its best year, with 11,521 installations recorded across the hardtop (body 25237) and convertible (25267). The package now made a 338 hp four-barrel 421 standard, along with heavy-duty springs and shocks, dual exhausts, and a 3.42:1 axle, with a Hurst-shifted four-speed optional; a 376 hp 421 HO Tri-Power remained optional on all models. The full-size line moved to a 121-inch wheelbase that year.1,2

Two conflicts run through the 1965 record. The 2+2 option's own price is disputed between a compiled production table's flat $291, which simply repeats the 1964 price, and the fact sheet's $397 for the hardtop and $419 for the convertible, figures that make more sense once the 421 became standard equipment rather than an add-on; both are shown, with a factory price sheet needed to settle it. Separately, the Catalina series total is disputed between 282,579 and 271,058: 271,058 leads because it is the sum of the seven body rows (78,853 four-door sedans, 34,814 four-door hardtops, 9,526 two-door sedans, 92,009 two-door hardtops, 18,347 convertibles, 15,110 nine-passenger Safaris, and 22,399 six-passenger Safaris), while 282,579 is that same figure plus the 11,521 2+2 option row counted a second time. A separate transmission breakdown of 14,817 manual and 256,241 Hydra-Matic cars sums to 271,058 as well, and a further row credits 5,316 2+2s specifically with the manual synchromesh, though no automatic count for the 2+2 alone is printed anywhere in the sources.2,1,3

List prices ran $2,809 for the two-door hardtop and $3,103 for the convertible; Car Life's own April 1965 test car carried a $3,287 list price and reached $4,545 as tested. The engine range ran from an automatic-only 256 hp 389 two-barrel (standard on everything except the 2+2) through a 290 hp high-compression two-barrel standard on Catalina and Star Chief, a 325 hp four-barrel, and a 338 hp Tri-Power (also unavailable on the 2+2, since the 421 took that slot there), up to a 338 hp 421 four-barrel standard on the 2+2 and optional elsewhere, a 356 hp 421 Tri-Power, and the range-topping 376 hp 421 HO Tri-Power at 5,000 rpm and 461 lb-ft at 3,600 rpm.2,4,1

Car Life tested a Catalina 2+2 hardtop with the 421 HO Tri-Power, four-speed manual, and a 4.11 overall top-gear ratio at a 4,440 lb test weight, recording 0-30 mph in 2.8 seconds, 0-40 in 4.0, 0-50 in 5.6, 0-60 in 7.2, 0-70 in 9.3, 0-80 in 11.2, and 0-100 in 17.5 seconds, the standing quarter mile in 15.5 seconds at 95 mph, and a 108 mph top speed at 5,500 rpm. The standard three-speed manual ran 2.42/1.61/1.00, the optional four-speed 2.56/1.91/1.48/1.00 with a Hurst shifter fitted to the 2+2, and the optional Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 ran 2.48/1.48/1.00.4,1

Further options included $204 bucket seats, a $108 console, a $54 tachometer, $120 aluminum hubs and brake drums for two-door cars, $40 Super-Lift shock absorbers, and $118 Ventura trim. On a 121-inch wheelbase, the Catalina measured 214.6 inches long, 79.6 inches wide, and 55.2 inches tall; the two-door hardtop carried a shipping weight of 3,748 lb against Car Life's own 4,110 lb curb-weight measurement for its 2+2 test car. Fourteen exterior colors were listed, and an unpublished lead notes an approximate claim, without a stated basis, that most 1965 2+2s were hardtops with fewer than 500 built as convertibles.1,2,4

  • $397 hardtop, $419 convertible1

Show both. The table's $291 repeats the 1964 price; the fact sheet's higher, body-specific prices reflect the 421 becoming standard. The factory price sheet should settle it.
