1965 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu SS: The 201 Cars That Rehearsed the SS 396

The Malibu SS continued with 327 options, and late in the year RPO Z16 put a 375 hp 396 into 201 Chevelles.

Around March 1965, according to ChevelleStuff's history of the Malibu SS, Chevrolet's Kansas City plant began a short run of Chevelles that nothing else in that year's order book could match. They were Malibu SS cars built under Regular Production Option Z16, and the site says they were built in preparation for the SS 396 series that would follow in 1966. Chevrolet's final option tally, as the same site tabulates it, lists Z16 Special Sport Coupe and Convertible Equipment on 201 cars at $1,501.05. Under the hood was RPO L37, a 396-cubic-inch V8 rated at 375 gross horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 420 lb-ft of torque at 3,600.1,2,2

The car underneath was already a success on its own terms. In the Chevelle's second year the Malibu SS was a series, not an option, offered as a sport coupe and a convertible with either six-cylinder or V8 model numbers. ChevelleStuff's tabulation counts 71,984 Malibu SS sport coupes and 9,128 convertibles, exports included, and the six-cylinder rows are not trivial: 7,234 coupes and 1,119 convertibles. Super Sport in 1965 still described trim and equipment as much as speed; a buyer could have the badge with a six. The whole Chevelle line, El Camino included, totalled 378,618 cars, a figure the site says agrees with Chevrolet's Accumulative Production Report of August 31, 1965.2

For nearly everyone who wanted more than the base V8, the answer was a 327. The option report lists the L30 at 250 gross horsepower on 36,261 cars for $94.70, the L74 at 300 horsepower on 13,593 cars for $137.75, and the L79 at 350 horsepower at 5,800 rpm on 6,021 cars for $202.30. Those counts cover every 1965 Chevelle and El Camino, not only the Super Sports. Set the Z16's $1,501.05 beside the L79's $202.30 and the package cost about seven and a half times as much as the hottest regular-production engine. It was priced like something other than an ordinary option, and it was built in numbers to match.2,2

The published ratings explain why the big-block mattered even though its horsepower figure was only 25 higher than the L79's. Chevrolet's numbers, as ChevelleStuff tabulates them, give the L79 327 its 350 gross horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 360 lb-ft at 3,600. The L37 396 made its 375 horsepower 200 rpm lower, at 5,600, and its 420 lb-ft of torque at the same 3,600 rpm, a margin of 60 lb-ft. The small-block was a high-revving engine asked to work hard; the 396 made its power with displacement. These are factory gross ratings, not measurements of any tested car, and without a period road test of a Z16 the comparison stays a matter of published figures.2

Exactly how many Z16s were built depends on which page of the same reference a reader trusts. The option table prints 201. ChevelleStuff's guide to identifying Super Sports speaks of a limited run of 200 Malibu SS sport coupes, and its Malibu SS history also says 200. Its engine page adds a third angle: 221 L37 engines in all and 201 L37 cars. The tempting reconciliation is 200 sport coupes plus one convertible, and the site reports that some claim exactly that. It also says no documented proof of that convertible has surfaced publicly. The option-report count of 201 leads here, the rounder 200 stands beside it, and the convertible remains a claim.2,3,1,1

The cars outside both counts are just as revealing. According to the same Malibu SS history, two test mules were built at Baltimore as ordinary 327/300 four-speed cars and sent to engineering for modification and the test fitting of components, and one is reported destroyed. The site says the surviving mule never received the upgraded frame or brakes, and it leaves both mules out of the 200 and 201 figures. That small detail carries a large point: the Z16 program involved frame and brake work that a standard Malibu SS did not get. It was engineered as a package, not merely a bigger engine dropped into an existing car.1

The competitive pressure had a name by then. Pontiac's GTO brochure of April 1964 advertised a 389 at 325 horsepower as standard and 348 horsepower with three two-barrel carburetors, sold as an option on the Tempest Le Mans intermediate. Chevrolet's regular-production reply in the 1965 Chevelle was the 327 ladder, and the option report shows a four-speed going into 39,092 Chevelles. The 396 existed, but in 201 cars. No source cited for this year explains why Chevrolet held the big-block to so small a run, so no reason is offered here; the numbers alone show how carefully it was rationed.2

The same ledger shows what the ordinary 1965 Chevelle buyer actually wanted, and it was not a drag strip. Powerglide went into 254,750 cars, roughly two-thirds of the 378,618 built. Four-Season air conditioning, at $363.70, went into 42,098 cars, more than took the $188.30 four-speed. Positraction appears on 23,023 cars, the tachometer on 7,724, metallic brakes on 1,506 and the 3.73:1 axle on only 293. These are line-wide counts across every series and body, so they describe the market the Z16 was born into rather than the Z16 itself: comfortable, mostly automatic, and only occasionally serious about speed.2,2

Put the Z16 against its own year and the rarity is plain arithmetic. With the line total of 378,618 as the denominator, 201 Z16s is about one Chevelle in 1,900. Even the L79, itself a specialist's engine at 6,021 installations, outnumbered the Z16 by thirty to one. ChevelleStuff's engine page counts 221 L37 engines in total and puts 91 percent of them in Chevelles, with the remainder listed as service engines. A population that small can be counted by hand, which is exactly why any car presented as a Z16 needs its own documentation rather than a badge and a story.2,2,1

The rehearsal paid off within months. For 1966 the SS 396 replaced the Malibu SS as its own V8-only series, and ChevelleStuff's 1966 tabulation, which it says agrees with Chevrolet's Accumulative Production Report of August 2, 1966, lists 66,843 SS 396 sport coupes and 5,429 convertibles. The engine choice widened as well, with the 396 listed at 325, 360 and 375 gross horsepower. A package built 201 times in 1965 had become the core of a series built by the tens of thousands a year later, and the Super Sport name that had once covered six-cylinder cars now promised a big-block in every one.3,4,4

What the Z16 left behind is a lesson in how Chevrolet introduced a big idea: expensively, in small numbers, and on a car that already sold by the tens of thousands. The 1965 ledger carries 36,261 L30s, 13,593 L74s and 6,021 L79s, the real volume performance of the year, and then a single line, Z16, with 201 against it. Sources disagree over whether that line should read 200 or 201, and over whether a Z16 convertible was ever built. The more durable fact is that a series whose sport coupes alone numbered 66,843 the following year grew out of that one line in the 1965 option report.2,3,1,4
