The 1965 full-size Ford wore a new body and added the LTD trim above the existing Galaxie 500 XL. The 427 continued as code Q, 410 hp with a single Holley four-barrel, and code R, 425 hp with dual Holley four-barrels, both at 10.9:1 compression, with a four-speed manual carrying a 2.32 first gear across the 352, 390, and 427. As reported, 28,141 Galaxie 500 XL hardtops and 9,849 convertibles were built against 157,284 ordinary Galaxie 500 hardtops and 31,930 convertibles, and 37,691 LTD two-door hardtops joined the line; no count of 427 installations was found.1

The Galaxie 500 XL series totaled 37,990 units (the hardtop and convertible figures above), while the new LTD line reached 105,729 as a genuinely separate model total, comprising 68,038 four-door hardtops and the 37,691 two-door hardtops already noted; the record's own production notes stress that the LTD total is not folded into the Galaxie 500 series figure. That Galaxie 500 series total came to 420,379, built up from 181,183 Town Sedans, 49,982 Town Victoria four-door hardtops, and the 500 hardtop and convertible counts above. For context, Custom added 145,427 and Custom 500 88,431, station wagons contributed 117,971, and all 1965 full-size Ford production reached 810,198.1,2

List prices ran from $2,623 for a six-cylinder Galaxie 500 Town Sedan up to $3,426 for a V8-only Galaxie 500 XL convertible; the LTD four-door hardtop listed at $3,245, while the LTD two-door hardtop matched the Galaxie 500 XL hardtop exactly at $3,167. The 390 Z carried a period rating of 300 hp at 4,600 rpm and 427 lb-ft at 2,800 rpm; the 427 Q made 410 hp at 5,600 rpm and 476 lb-ft at 3,400 rpm, and the dual-quad 427 R made 425 hp at 6,000 rpm and 480 lb-ft at 3,700 rpm.2,1

The powertrain price sheet lists a 289 V8 option at $109 and two separate 390 V8 price tiers, $205 or $246 in Custom and Galaxie but only $108 or $137 in LTD and 500 XL, without naming which version of the engine each tier represents, an ambiguity the record's own note flags rather than resolves. The four-speed manual, geared 2.32/1.69/1.29/1.00 across the 352, 390, and 427, added $188 and was required with the 410 or 425 hp engine; a close-ratio 390/427 High Performance four-speed is separately listed at 2.22/1.43/1.19/1.00, with a second 2.32/1.54/1.23 set also given for the same application. A three-speed manual with overdrive, not available with the 427, ran $108, and a V8-only Cruise-O-Matic ran $189.1

On a 119-inch wheelbase, the 1965 Ford measured 210.0 inches long and 77.3 inches wide, with an equal 62.0-inch front and rear track and overall heights of 54.7 inches for hardtops and 54.8 inches for the convertible. Shipping weight with the V8 ran 3,402 lb for the Galaxie 500 hardtop up to 3,675 lb for the Galaxie 500 XL convertible, with the Galaxie 500 XL hardtop itself at 3,507 lb. The 427 and Police Interceptor cars specified 7.75x15 tires, and the 427 High Performance's rear axle ran 3.50:1 with the four-speed, with 4.11:1 optional. Fourteen exterior colors were charted, including Raven Black, Wimbledon White, Rangoon Red, Caspian Blue, Honey Gold, and Dynasty Green.1,2

Coverage: Partial — researched sections are shown; missing ones are not yet sourced. Researched through 2026-09-23.

Every figure is labeled with how sure we are. Reported means a manufacturer, registry, or reference figure we cite but have not reconciled against factory records ourselves. Disputed means credible sources disagree and both are shown. Rows are separately scoped; don't add them together unless the note says they make up a total.
