Cautions for this scheme
- This is a pre-VIN serial number: ten characters, read as car line, model, model year, assembly plant, and a six-digit sequence. A decode reads what the cited references say each character means; it does not prove the car is original, correct, or the car the plate was made for.
- The serial number carries no engine code beyond the six/V-8 split some car-line characters make. Engine, paint, trim and options are on the engine pad and the body number plate (1964 manual p. 5), which this pack does not decode.
- The model-year character is shown as the final digit of the year (2 = 1962 … 5 = 1965). Both references say the third character is the model year and give the year, but neither prints the character itself. The same convention is printed explicitly in Chrysler's 1966 and later bulletins (6 = 1966, 7 = 1967). Treat this reading as sourced-but-inferred until a 1962–1965 factory page that prints the character is found.
- Most codes here come from a club reference (Early Valiant & Barracuda Club), not a factory document; only the 1964 Plymouth and Valiant car-line, model and plant entries are confirmed by a factory service manual. The club's model table merges every make into one list per digit, so a Dodge, Chrysler or Imperial model decode lists the models of all makes that shared the digit; read it with the car line.
- Plant digit 4 is left undecoded for 1962–1965 because the sources disagree (see conflicts). Plant digit 8 is not listed for these years.
- 1960 Chrysler and Imperial numbers are decoded by chrysler-imperial-1960 (whole four-digit prefixes from the 1960 factory manual); 1961 numbers are not decoded (see chrysler-1955-1961-not-decodable.md). The Chrysler 300 letter cars (300H 1962, 300J 1963, 300K 1964, 300L 1965) decode through model digit 4 in the club table.
