1964 Chevrolet Chevelle Super Sport: The Revision Date Matters

Chevrolet's new intermediate could be ordered with a 327 in two documented power teams, which is why the mid-size performance story was never only a Pontiac one.

Chevrolet’s 1964 Chevelle information kit is not one timeless specification sheet. It is a stack of releases revised as the model year moved. That makes it a particularly useful document for understanding the first Malibu Super Sport. A January option list, a June power-team chart, and a June engine table do not all answer the same question. The history becomes trustworthy only when dates remain attached. For this comparison, the released street configurations stop where Chevrolet’s later detailed material stops: the L30 and L74 327 V8s.

The body was the Malibu Super Sport two-door sport coupe, part of Chevrolet’s new 115-inch-wheelbase intermediate line. Super Sport brought identity and equipment context, but it did not identify one engine. A buyer could configure the car through the available power teams. That is why the selector begins below the badge. “1964 Chevelle SS” is a family description; L30 with four-speed and L74 with four-speed are the two researched combinations being compared.

RPO L30 used a 327-cubic-inch four-barrel V8 with 10.5:1 compression. Chevrolet published 250 gross horsepower at 4,400 rpm and 210 net horsepower at the same speed, plus 350 gross lb-ft at 2,800 rpm and 315 net lb-ft at 2,600 rpm. Both bases remain visible. As the 1955 Chevrolet records already demonstrate, the company’s gross and net fields describe different test conditions. Choosing only the larger number would erase information the factory deliberately supplied.

The selected L30 configuration uses a four-speed manual, one of the transmissions in Chevrolet’s power-team chart alongside three-speed and Powerglide choices. That chart is stronger evidence than finding an engine in one paragraph and a transmission in another. It establishes applicability for a real offered combination without proving how many cars received it. A brochure or release defines the catalog; authentication of an individual Chevelle still requires vehicle-specific records and physical evidence.

L74 raised the advertised gross rating to 300 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and gross torque to 360 lb-ft at 3,200 rpm, again from 327 cubic inches and 10.5:1 compression. The June chart lists four-speed and Powerglide availability. The comparison selects the four-speed so that the two Chevrolet branches expose an engine decision rather than an automatic-versus-manual decision. No performance result is inferred from the fifty-horsepower nominal gap. Axle, tires, weight, tune, weather, and test method still matter.

The January list introduces the major conflict. It includes RPO L76, a 327 associated with a 365-horsepower figure. The revised June power-team chart and detailed engine release stop at L74. That could reflect a planned option, a revision, a restricted release, or another administrative history, but the located records do not establish ordinary customer availability. The site does not choose January because it is more exciting. L76 remains out of the selector until a dated dealer bulletin, order record, build document, or other Chevrolet artifact explains how it reached a Chevelle.

The familiar 327/365 number also belongs to Corvette history, which makes accidental transfer especially easy. VetteFacts’ 1964 Corvette page owns the sports-car application and provides the contextual path. A Chevrolet engine rating in one product line cannot be imported into another solely because displacement and year match. The cross-link helps readers follow the shared engine family while the Chevelle record remains controlled by Chevelle-specific releases.

This distinction is central to the wider Car Facts family. Corvette stays out of the American muscle catalog, but its engineering can intersect the cars documented here. Camaro would later build its own small-block identity, and Chevelle would become associated with larger engines in later years. The 1964 page resists reading that future backward. It tells what Chevrolet had released for this new intermediate at the dates represented in the kit, then marks the unresolved revision instead of filling it with later reputation.

The Chevelle also clarifies why the 1964 market cannot be reduced to GTO versus everyone else. Pontiac’s two GTO configurations used a 389 and carried a deliberately confrontational performance voice. Chevrolet’s supported SS choices used a smaller 327 with distinct gross and net reporting. Ford, Plymouth, and Dodge placed higher-output engines in larger full-size bodies. Oldsmobile’s regular Cutlass configuration is supportable, while the midyear 4-4-2 package still lacks its period package artifact. Several performance strategies were moving at once.

Factory ratings do not settle which strategy worked best on the road. This release contains no matched period tests of exact GTO, Chevelle, Galaxie, Sport Fury, and Polara configurations under common conditions. It therefore supplies a provenance-aware specifications comparison, not a simulated race. A future magazine result must identify the tested body, engine, transmission, axle, tires, weight, preparation, date, and method. It enters as a measured observation, never as a replacement for factory configuration data.

Production totals remain outside this first Chevelle pass too. The goal is not to create a complete-looking row by borrowing a later compilation. The period kit establishes model identities, power teams, and engine ratings. If a final Chevrolet report or a directly inspected authoritative compilation supplies body and engine counts, the claim ledger can add them with scope. Until then, availability is not converted into quantity, and a surviving SS is not authenticated by its badges.

The same caution applies to weight. A body-series figure, shipping value, homologation value, and equipped road-test weight answer different questions. The first comparison does not force one into a generic cell merely to match Pontiac’s body-specific shipping figures. When a Chevelle weight is added, it must identify body, equipment, fuel or payload convention, source date, and definition so readers can compare unlike measurements consciously rather than accidentally.

The 1964 Chevelle Super Sport story is therefore a story about controlled possibility. Chevrolet had built a new intermediate, placed Super Sport in it, and documented at least two increasingly powerful 327/four-speed combinations. The January L76 line shows that the year’s paper trail contains ambitions and revisions as well as released products. By following the June detail for the selector and telling the January conflict openly, the page gives readers both the cars that clear publication and the reason the most famous unresolved number does not.
