For 1968 Ford split the restyled intermediate into the lower Fairlane and Fairlane 500 series, covered in this record, beneath the new Torino and Torino GT, whose performance equipment and pace-car package belong to their own 1968 record. The 428 Cobra Jet became an engine option on April 1, 1968, mid-year, while a 390 hp 427 appears in early factory literature but, per the compilation consulted, was never actually installed in a single 1968 Fairlane or Torino.1
Three conflicts run through this year's production figures. The Fairlane-Torino line total is disputed between 388,489 "delivered" (the fact sheet) and 371,787 (a Standard Catalog lineage relayed through Wikipedia, citing Flory p. 599), shown side by side and unresolved. The Fairlane 500 convertible count is disputed between 3,751 (fact sheet) and 3,761 (a separate production table from the same publisher), with the table's figure fitting its own 122,075 Fairlane 500 series total. And the Fairlane 500 four-door sedan count is disputed between 42,390 (fact sheet and production table, consistent with the 371,787 line total) and 42,930 (a separate fordfairlane.com registry, consistent instead with a 372,327 line total); the two totals differ by exactly the same 540-car gap as the sedan figures, pointing to a transposed digit somewhere in one Standard-Catalog-derived lineage or the other, though no primary factory copy was seen to settle which.1,2,3,4
Within the body breakdown, the Fairlane series reports 44,683 two-door hardtops, 18,146 four-door sedans, and 14,800 station wagons, while the Fairlane 500 series reports 33,282 two-door hardtops, 32,452 fastbacks, and 10,190 station wagons alongside the disputed convertible and sedan figures. A separate registry further splits both the fastback and hardtop by seating: 29,168 bench-seat fastbacks (63B) and 3,284 bucket-seat fastbacks (63E) sum to the reported 32,452, while 31,461 bench-seat hardtops (65B) and 1,821 bucket-seat hardtops (65E) sum to the reported 33,282; the same registry splits the convertible into 3,422 bench-seat (76B) and 339 bucket-seat (76E) cars, summing to 3,761, the production table's own figure rather than the fact sheet's 3,751.1,4
List prices ran from $2,456 (six) and $2,544 (V8) for the Fairlane two-door hardtop up to $2,910 for a V8 Fairlane 500 convertible, with the four-door sedan, fastback, hardtop, and wagon bodies filling in between across both series. The standard 200 six made 115 hp; a 302 two-barrel added $107 for 210 hp, a 390 two-barrel $184 for 265 hp, and a 390 GT four-barrel $264 for 335 hp. The 428 Cobra Jet, available from April 1, made 335 hp at 5,600 rpm and 445 lb-ft at 3,400 rpm, while the listed-but-unbuilt 427 carried a sourced production figure of zero, the compilation stating directly that none were produced despite appearing in the catalog.3,1
A three-speed manual was standard, with a four-speed manual optional at $184 (not available on wagons with the 302) and Cruise-O-Matic optional at $184 for the six and 302 or $220 for the 390. Further options included $353 air conditioning, a $57 AM radio, $133 AM/FM, a $128 8-track player, $42 power brakes, $84 power steering, $99 power windows, a $74 vinyl roof for the two-door hardtop, and, for station wagons, a $44 luggage rack and a $32 power tailgate window.1
On a 116.0-inch wheelbase (113.0 for wagons), the Fairlane measured 201.1 inches long (203.9 for wagons) and 74.5 inches wide, with a 58.83-inch front and 58.93-inch rear track; base tires away from wagons and GT models ran 7.35 x 14. Shipping weight with a V8 ran from 3,125 lb for the Fairlane hardtop up to 3,323 lb for the Fairlane 500 convertible, with the 500 fastback at 3,177 lb (2,994 lb with the six). - AMC AMX AMC's two-seat AMX arrived mid-year on a 97-inch wheelbase. The enthusiast production table counts 6,725 cars, two-thirds of them with the 390.
- AMC Javelin AMC's first pony car, launched in September 1967 as base and SST hardtops. Production of the two combined was about 55,000.
- AMC Rebel and Rebel Machine Now badged AMC, the Rebel came in 550, 770 and SST trims and could be ordered with the 315-hp 390. It is host-car context for the 1970 Machine.
- Buick Riviera Record Riviera sales of 49,284, including 5,337 with the GS handling option.

- Ford Thunderbird The new 429 Thunder Jet V-8 arrived as the Thunderbird's optional engine at 360 hp.
- Ford Torino Torino arrived as the new top series of the restyled Fairlane line, the Torino GT fastback became its volume performance car, and the 428 Cobra Jet was added on April 1, 1968.
- Mercury Comet and Cyclone The Cyclone moved to the new Montego-based intermediate; the fastback outsold the notchback hardtop by about ten to one, and the 428 Cobra Jet arrived mid-year.
- Mercury Cougar The year of the 427 GT-E, the mid-year 428 Cobra Jet, and the XR7-G, with production down to 113,741.
- Mercury Marauder and S-55 Neither the S-55 nor the Marauder model appears in the sources for 1968; no performance full-size Mercury production figure was found.
- Oldsmobile Cutlass, 4-4-2 and Hurst/Olds The restyled 4-4-2 became its own series, the W-31 small-block arrived, and Hurst built the first 455 Hurst/Olds: 515 cars in the tabulation.
- Plymouth Barracuda and 'Cuda The new 340 arrived in the Formula S alongside the 383, and Plymouth issued a competition-only Hemi Barracuda under order code BO29.
- Plymouth GTX, Belvedere and Satellite The GTX became its own model on the restyled 1968 intermediate body, still with the 375-hp 440 standard and the Hemi at $605, and outsold its first year.
- Plymouth Road Runner Plymouth added a stripped Belvedere-based coupe and hardtop with a special 335-hp 383 as standard and the 426 Hemi as the only engine option, and sold 44,599 of them.
- Pontiac Firebird and Trans Am The first full season: the six grew to 250 cu in, the 326 gave way to a 350, and output rose to 107,112.
- Pontiac GTO A new 112-inch-wheelbase body with an Endura nose, the sport coupe dropped, and 87,684 built.
- Pontiac Grand Prix The last full-size Grand Prix: 31,711 hardtops, with a 390 hp 428 HO at the top.
- Pontiac Tempest and LeMans The new two-door body arrives, and a 350 HO replaces the 326 HO.
