The GTX Becomes Its Own Series
The GTX became its own model on the restyled 1968 intermediate body, still with the 375-hp 440 standard and the Hemi at $605, and outsold its first year.
United States · researched through 2026-09-22
For 1968 the GTX became its own series, DR2, on the restyled Plymouth intermediate body, with 17,914 hardtops (RS23) and 1,026 convertibles (RS27) for a stated 18,940 model total. The Sport Satellite, the range's other bucket-seat model, ran higher in hardtop volume at 21,014 units but lower in convertibles at 1,523, so the GTX and Sport Satellite split the intermediate line's two bucket-seat body styles between them rather than either one dominating both.1
The 440 Super Commando, rated 375 hp at 4,600 rpm and 480 lb-ft at 3,200 rpm, was standard equipment in the GTX, with the 426 Hemi available as a $605 option, notably cheaper than the same Hemi's $714 price in the Road Runner despite both cars sharing the identical 425-hp, 490-lb-ft Hemi rating. A single secondary lineage, repeating Chrysler production figures as compiled by UltimateMuscleCar, puts 1968 GTX Hemi installations at 446, though that source's own scope, whether it counts hardtops and convertibles together or separately, is not stated, so this record carries the 446 figure without further breakdown. No documented engine or transmission split for the standard 440 versus the optional Hemi was found across the 18,940 total GTX production for the year.1,2
One further Hemi-specific claim was found but not tabulated: an auction-news article states that only 36 1968 GTX Hemi convertibles were built, 24 with automatic and 12 with the four-speed, but since that source names no underlying factory record, this record carries the 36 figure only as an unpublished lead rather than a production count alongside the 446 total Hemi GTX figure above.1
The four-speed manual came at no additional charge in the GTX, while TorqueFlite automatic ran $227 with any V8 besides the 273. A Sure-Grip axle, shared with the Road Runner, cost $146, and a performance hood finish ran $18, alongside $15 body accent stripes and $102 road wheels. Air conditioning, at $355, sat well above smaller items like a $16 electric clock, $14 bumper guards, or a $21 rear window defogger. Sport-style wheel covers, at $38, were explicitly not available with the Street Hemi per the fact sheet's own note, one of the few option restrictions tied specifically to that engine in the sources consulted, and a solid-state AM radio with stereo tape ran $195 against $60 for the plain solid-state AM set alone.1
Shipping weight ran 3,520 lb for the GTX hardtop and 3,620 lb for the convertible, on a 116.0-inch wheelbase and 202.7-inch overall length shared with the other non-wagon intermediate bodies. Standard tires on the 440 and 426 cars ran F70x14, and twenty exterior colors were charted, from Buffed Silver and Black Velvet through Sunfire Yellow and Sierra Tan. Factory prices ran $3,329 for the hardtop and $3,590 for the convertible, and series and body numbers ran DR2 for the GTX series with RS23 and RS27 for its two bodies. No interior trim, performance figures, or engine/transmission production breakdown survive in the sources consulted for the year, leaving production, prices, the two-engine lineup, options, paint, and these specifications as the whole of what this record can document for the GTX's second season.1

Coverage: Partial — researched sections are shown; missing ones are not yet sourced. Researched through 2026-09-22.
Every figure is labeled with how sure we are. Reported means a manufacturer, registry, or reference figure we cite but have not reconciled against factory records ourselves. Disputed means credible sources disagree and both are shown. Rows are separately scoped; don't add them together unless the note says they make up a total.
