1970 AMC AMX: The Last Two-Seater Got Its Best Engine and Its Smallest Audience

The last two-seat AMX: a restyled nose, a 360 base V8 and a 325-hp 390. At 4,116 cars it was the rarest of the three two-seat years.

Motor Trend's Eric Dahlquist ran the 1970 AMX in the magazine's December 1969 issue. His test car had the optional 390 V8, a Borg-Warner four-speed and a 3.54:1 rear axle. As reported by Old Cars Weekly, it reached 60 mph in 6.56 seconds, covered the quarter-mile in 14.68 seconds at 92 mph and topped out at 109 mph in fourth gear. Dahlquist called it “one of the better constructed cars around.” That was a strong review for a car in its third and final season as a two-seater. It was also the best-developed version of the idea, and it was about to become the rarest.1

American Motors changed a great deal for the last year. Old Cars Weekly describes a completely restyled front end shared with the Javelin's performance models. The grille now sat flush with the hood, and a large ram-induction scoop fed cold air to the engine. The car was about an inch lower and about two inches longer, at 179 inches, but kept the 97-inch wheelbase. Inside were new contoured high-back buckets with built-in head restraints and a redesigned instrument panel. The weight rose to 3,126 pounds, which Old Cars Weekly notes was only 29 pounds more than 1969. AMC's 1970 full-line brochure documented the AMX's four-speed power teams with both of the year's V8s.1

The engines changed too. The 290 and 343 were gone, and the new 360 four-barrel became standard at 290 horsepower at 4,800 rpm, a period gross-era rating. Its torque carries two published values. AMC's brochure prints 390 lb-ft, and Old Cars Weekly gives 395 lb-ft at 3,200 rpm, so the factory figure leads and the secondary figure is noted. The optional 390 was rerated to 325 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 420 lb-ft at 3,200, ten horsepower more than the 1968–69 rating. Old Cars Weekly gives both engines 10.0:1 compression. A Hurst-shifted four-speed was standard and the Shift-Command automatic was optional.1

Old Cars Weekly reports a base price of $3,395, $150 more than the $3,245 it gives for 1968; neither figure states its basis. The Go Package now cost $298.85 with the 360 or $383.90 with the 390, prices Planet Houston AMX rounds to $299 and $384. It bundled power front disc brakes, F70x14 raised-white-letter tires, Twin-Grip, the handling package, heavy-duty cooling, a space-saver spare and the functional Ram Air power-blister hood. Among the other options were air conditioning at $380, power steering at $102 and a $52 Shadow Mask treatment. Planet Houston AMX lists the Shadow Mask as an extra-cost paint option.1,2

Unlike 1969, the total is not in dispute. Planet Houston AMX's engine-and-transmission table, the weekly production series credited to Linn Barton and Old Cars Weekly all give 4,116. Old Cars Weekly names no source, so that agreement is one reported figure, not three independent confirmations. The table splits the total into 836 360 four-speeds, 747 360 automatics, 1,632 390 four-speeds and 901 390 automatics. With 4,116 as the denominator, the 390 went into 2,533 cars, about 62 percent, and four-speeds into 2,468, about 60 percent. The single largest combination was again the 390 with a four-speed. Buyers of the last two-seater mostly ordered the strongest engine and the stick.3,4,1

The option-installation table for 1970 is more useful for trends than for exact counts. It reports Ram Air on 2,875 cars, about 70 percent, power front disc brakes on 3,383 and the Shadow Mask on 982. Air conditioning went on 1,056 cars, and all 4,116 are listed with Rally wheels, 628 of them with machined rims. But the table's own transmission rows, 2,468 four-speeds and 1,464 automatics, add up to 3,932, not 4,116. Its automatic count does not match the engine table's 1,648. It also prints Twin-Grip at 340 even though Twin-Grip was part of the Go Package. The source does not reconcile any of this, so the figures are shown as printed.3,2

Comfort options show that not every 1970 buyer wanted a stripped performance car. Old Cars Weekly prices air conditioning at $380 and power steering at $102, and the option table counts 1,056 air-conditioned cars and 2,869 with power steering out of 4,116, roughly a quarter and seven in ten. The table also lists 823 tilt columns, 1,139 center armrests, 728 luggage racks and 56 heated rear windows. Radios split among 2,568 AM sets, 482 AM/FM units and 556 AM/8-track units. The two-seater was still a sports car, but many of its last buyers ordered it as a comfortable, well-equipped one.1,3

The color story shrank with the car. The Big Bad colors carried over, and Planet Houston AMX and JavelinAMX.com agree on 114 blue, 74 green and 122 orange 1970 AMXs, 310 cars in all. That is fewer than half of 1969's Big Bad total. In the interior, leather still commanded attention. The compilation counts 98 black-leather, 181 red-leather and 487 saddle-leather cars, and blue came only in Ventilaire vinyl. Black vinyl, at 1,701 cars, was the common choice. Old Cars Weekly gives the 1970 dash plate numbers as 014469 to 18584. No factory breakdown of the regular paint colors has been published, so the Big Bad counts are again the only color data available.3,5,1

Better equipment did not bring in more buyers. From 8,293 in 1969 by the engine table, production fell to 4,116, a drop of about half, even with more power and a stronger review. Ate Up With Motor records the internal argument that followed. Styling chief Dick Teague pushed hard to keep the two-seater as an image builder. President William Luneburg decided that the cut-down car's sales did not justify the production complications it created. The 1970 car was therefore the last AMX built on the 97-inch wheelbase. Old Cars Weekly calls it the rarest of the three two-seat editions, and the production table bears that out: 4,116 against 6,725 and 8,293.3,6,1

The name survived the car. For 1971 AMX became the top model of the redesigned Javelin, which by Ate Up With Motor's figures had a 110-inch wheelbase and a 192.3-inch overall length. It was a four-seat pony car, not a short two-seater, and Old Cars Weekly counts 2,054 of that first Javelin AMX. The three two-seat years add up to 19,134 cars in Planet Houston AMX's table. The 1970 car accounts for just over a fifth of them, and it was the one Motor Trend praised for its construction. AMC had built its best two-seater in the year it decided to stop building two-seaters.6,1,3

The four engine-transmission rows are the source's partition of 4,116.

The option table's 1970 transmission rows (automatic 1,464, four-speed 2,468) sum to 3,932, not 4,116. The engine table's automatic column sums to 1,648. The two tables are not reconciled by the source.

Option and paint rows are separately scoped. Do not add them.

The two AMC tally-sheet rows (sheet-*) restate the 4,116 by engine; they are not additional cars. The sheet total for row 7030 is also 4,116.

The 390 lb-ft claim traces to the comparisons file, not to the printed brochure. Lead with 395 lb-ft @ 3,200 rpm and keep the 390 claim visible as a transcription variant.
