Cautions for this scheme
- Decoded from Ford's own VIN code submissions to NHTSA (1984, 1985, 1987, 1988 and 1989 model years). A decode shows what the VIN says, not what the car is; it is not authentication.
- Model years 1981-1983 are not covered: NHTSA's database holds no Ford VIN code submission for them. Model year 1986 is not covered: its transmittal (01-22-N11B-1942) could not be retrieved.
- In 1984-1985 position 5 is the constant "P" on every Ford, Lincoln, Mercury and Continental passenger car, so the line code is read against the WMI (1FA/2FA Ford, 1ME/2ME Mercury, 1MR Continental). From 1987 position 5 is P for Ford and M for Lincoln or Mercury.
- Only subject lines (Thunderbird, Cougar, Capri, Mark VII, Taurus SHO) and Mustang (for hand-off) are tabulated; other line codes show as unknown code. Engine codes are taken from each year's passenger-car engine table; some small-car-only engines (1.9L, 2.0L diesel, Mazda-built) are omitted and show as unknown code.
- The 1988 plant-code page (Attachment p. 11) is missing from NHTSA's scan of 01-22-N11B-2661, so 1988 plant codes show as unknown code.
- The 1989 Mercury Capri (line codes 01 and 03 in the May 1988 transmittal) was deleted from the 1989 line-up by Revision No. 2 and is not tabulated.
Where the sources disagree
- The 1989 3.8L supercharged V-6 was listed as engine code C in the May 11, 1988 transmittal and revised to R on Dec. 23, 1988; some early-built 1989 Thunderbird/Cougar may carry C.
- Revision No. 2 footnote a/: 7,749 early-build 1989 Continentals were assigned restraint code C instead of L.
- The May 11, 1988 transmittal lists Mercury Capri line codes 01 (Base) and 03 (XR2) and WMI 6MP; Revision No. 2 deletes the Capri from the 1989 line-up and strikes 6MP.
