1971 Ford Ranchero GT: two 429s and a disputed count

United States · researched through 2026-09-23
This record's own dek describes 1971 as the second Torino-based Ranchero year. Barn Finds gives 24,946 Rancheros for the year, about 3,900 of them GTs, with the 429 Cobra Jet and Super Cobra Jet both remaining available; the same overview cites autoevolution for a combined 1970-71 GT sales figure of nearly 8,000 across both model years together, a figure this record carries as the two years' combined total rather than as a 1971-specific count.1,2
This record's own conflicts section carries the GT count as a genuine dispute: Barn Finds gives a rounded 3,900 on a sales basis, while Ford-Torino.de's production overview instead gives a precise 3,632 on a built basis, and this record's own treatment keeps both figures rather than picking one, noting that the rounded auction-listing article and the reference-site production figure are simply two different kinds of count, with neither naming an actual Ford record behind it. Three further context rows, not GTs themselves, give 6,041 base Rancheros, 12,678 Ranchero Customs and 2,595 Squires for the same model year, kept separately scoped rather than summed with the GT figures.1,3
This record's own paint section carries a documented methodological caveat: the twenty colors listed come from the 1971 Ford passenger-car ("Non-Trucks") palette rather than the separate 1971 Ford Trucks palette, a choice made on the reasoning that the Ranchero was built on the Torino passenger platform and shared its trim this generation, but this record states plainly that the choice is not independently confirmed against a Ranchero-specific order form, and that Ford's own factory paperwork may have classified Ranchero paint orders under the truck list instead.4
Two engines are documented for 1971, both 429-cu-in four-barrel V8s rated on the SAE gross standard: the Cobra Jet at 370 hp, with Ram Air available as an option, and the Super Cobra Jet, tied to the Drag Pack, at 375 hp. This record's own transmissions and options sections are both empty despite these two distinct engine choices being documented, and its price section carries the same editorial note found elsewhere in this record: a J.D. Power-sourced figure was removed as of September 24, 2026, since those live valuation pages cannot be independently verified, and no replacement source this record can stand behind has yet been found.2,5
Three unpublished leads bear on the GT production figures already given above. One repeats the 3,632 figure but was seen only in a search-engine snippet, with the underlying page unreachable in this pass. A ranchero.us forum post gives the identical 3,632 GT, 6,041 base, 12,678 Custom and 2,595 Squire lineage, again naming no source beyond the usual attribution to the Standard Catalog of American Light-Duty Trucks. A French photo site, trombinoscar.com, instead lumps the Ranchero 500 and GT together into a single combined figure of 12,678, a scope error this record notes explicitly rather than treating as a genuine alternative GT count, since that same site's Ranchero pages carry labelling errors across several other model years.3
This record's interiors, specifications, performance and identification sections are all empty for 1971, a documented absence of sourced material for those categories rather than an assumption that the GT shipped without an interior, dimensions or measured performance despite carrying two distinct high-performance 429 engine options that model year. No wheelbase, length, weight, road-test data, or body-plate detail was found in an accessible source, leaving production, the two 429 engines, the paint list and the price note above as the whole of this record's coverage for 1971.5

Coverage: Partial — researched sections are shown; missing ones are not yet sourced. Researched through 2026-09-23.
Every figure is labeled with how sure we are. Reported means a manufacturer, registry, or reference figure we cite but have not reconciled against factory records ourselves. Disputed means credible sources disagree and both are shown. Rows are separately scoped; don't add them together unless the note says they make up a total.

Prices when new *
No price is shown here. One was, until 2026-09-24: a figure from J.D. Power's live valuation pages, pulled from every page on this site because those pages can change without our knowing and we have no way to check them independently. We haven't found a source we can stand behind to put in its place yet. A price for this car elsewhere that looks suspiciously exact may be quoting that same J.D. Power figure rather than confirming it — several sites we checked turned out to be doing exactly that, without saying so.

Same model year
Also in 1971
- AMC AMX The AMX name moves onto the redesigned Javelin as its top model. It is a derivative badge, not a continuation of the two-seater. 2,054 were built, all with the 360 or 401.
- AMC Hornet SC/360 AMC's one-year compact muscle car pitched as an insurance-friendly alternative. AMC reportedly planned 10,000, but 784 were built.

- Oldsmobile Cutlass, 4-4-2 and Hurst/Olds Compression fell to 8.5:1 for regular fuel, the W-31 was dropped, the sports coupe was gone, and 4-4-2 production fell to 7,589.
- Plymouth Barracuda and 'Cuda Four headlamps and a new grille marked the second E-body year; the Hemi and 440 Six Barrel stayed on the 'Cuda order form, but Barracuda-line production fell to about a third of 1970's.
- Plymouth Duster 340 and 360 The Duster 340's second year brought a new grille, a Thermo-Quad 340 rated 275 gross and 235 net hp, and a $2,703 list price, while output fell to about 12,900.
