1967 Buick Riviera: The 430 Arrives
A new 430 V-8 (360 hp, 475 lb-ft) replaced the Nailhead; 4,837 cars had the GS handling option.
United States · researched through 2026-09-22
For 1967 Buick replaced the 425 Nailhead with a new 430-cubic-inch V-8, this record's own overview states, rated 360 horsepower and 475 lb-ft, and front disc brakes became optional for the first time. The Riviera Owners Association lists 42,799 Rivieras for the year, including 4,837 with the GS handling option, every one of them carrying the same 430 rated 360 horsepower SAE gross; this record's own production notes state plainly that the GS row is a subset of that total rather than a separate lineage.1,2
This record's own key facts section restates the GS figure directly: 4,837 cars, drawn from the same Owners Association production row the overview cites. This record's own conflicts and unpublished-leads sections are both empty for the year, and its own production table shows ROA and Wikipedia agreeing on the 42,799 total without qualification, the note on that row simply stating the two sources agree.2,1
This record's own identification section carries the 1967 engine codes: ND, printed as MD in one source, for the 430 at 360 horsepower with 10.25:1 compression and a single four-barrel, and NE for a low-compression 430; the Owners Association's own GS table uses ND for the 1967 Riviera. The same section describes how a 1967 GS presents itself: red slanted "GS" emblems after the Riviera script on the front fenders, no rear or interior GS emblems at all, a red double-snorkel fibreglass air cleaner the source calls a "Star Wars" design, heavy-duty suspension, a 3.42 Positive Traction axle, and either 8.45x15 whitewalls or H70-15 wide-oval tires in red-line or whitewall finish. The body carried number 49487, this record's own identification section states.3,4,2
This record's own options section itemizes 48 entries, led by the A9 GS Option itself at $137.88, bundling the dual-inlet air cleaner, heavy-duty suspension, the Positive Traction differential with 3.42 axle, whitewall or red-line tires and GS-specific ornamentation, unavailable alongside the trailer-towing, ride-and-handling or automatic-level-control options. Power front disc brakes, code C1 at $78.94, were ordered on only about 6 percent of 1967 Rivieras per the Owners Association's own Evolution article, while manual air conditioning at $421 reached an estimated 84.7 percent and power windows at $105.25 reached 81.1 percent; the automatic-climate-control option, code I5, carries no price at all in this record's own sources.5,6
This record's own paint table carries 15 colours from the Owners Association's 1967 chart, five of them marked Riviera-exclusive: Riviera Turquoise, Riviera Plum, Riviera Charcoal, Riviera Fawn, Riviera Red and Riviera Gold among the fifteen. Its interiors section carries 14 trims: four standard vinyl bench or bucket colours, four optional custom vinyl bucket colours, and six further Strato bench choices split between cloth-and-vinyl and vinyl-only finishes.7
This record's own prices section carries a single 1967 figure, $4,469 for the sport coupe on a manufacturer's suggested retail basis with destination charge extra, drawn from both a period Buick facts-and-features sheet and the Owners Association's own options-and-prices page. This record's own specifications section carries seven figures from the Owners Association's weights-and-measures table: a 4,420-pound curb weight, a 119.0-inch wheelbase, front and rear track of 63.4 and 63.0 inches, a 211.2-inch overall length, a 78.8-inch width, a 53.4-inch height, and an 8.45x15 tire size.5,8

Coverage: Partial — researched sections are shown; missing ones are not yet sourced. Researched through 2026-09-22.
Every figure is labeled with how sure we are. Reported means a manufacturer, registry, or reference figure we cite but have not reconciled against factory records ourselves. Disputed means credible sources disagree and both are shown. Rows are separately scoped; don't add them together unless the note says they make up a total.
