1967 Pontiac Firebird hardtop coupe, the first-year Firebird (1967 Canadian Firebird brochure)

The Firebird arrived for 1967 as Pontiac's answer to the pony-car market that Ford's Mustang had opened three years earlier, built on the General Motors F-body platform it shared with the new Chevrolet Camaro but carrying its own nose, grille and division-specific detailing. Car and Driver's March 1967 road test describes a lineup of five models distinguished entirely by drivetrain rather than trim level: the overhead-cam Firebird Six as the base car, a four-barrel Sprint six above it, the Firebird 326 and 326 HO V-8 models in the middle, and the Firebird 400 at the top of the range, tested by the magazine in convertible form with Ram Air hood scoops.1

Two compiled production tables agree closely on first-year volume. A table drawn from Over-Drive Magazine's Pontiac records credits the model year with 82,560 Firebirds built, split as 67,032 hardtop coupes and 15,528 convertibles, and MuscleCarClub's production history repeats the same body-style split for 1967. A separate, uncited table hosted by The Pontiac Trans Am Page divides that identical 82,560 total eight ways, by six-cylinder or V-8 power, standard or deluxe trim, and manual or automatic transmission, and its eight rows sum exactly to the reported total, a level of internal consistency that keeps the rows in this record even though no single named source stands behind them.2,3,4

Pontiac's own body-style numbers identify the two Firebird shells: 22337 for the hardtop coupe and 22367 for the convertible, both carried under series 223 as printed for the six-cylinder cars. The compiled factory-price data pairs a base hardtop with the six-cylinder engine at $2,666 and a base convertible at $2,903, figures drawn from the same production table that supplies the body-style numbers and shipping weights, with no stated compilation date beyond the model year itself.2

Six engines are documented for the model year. The standard 230-cubic-inch overhead-cam six made 165 hp at 4,700 rpm and 216 lb-ft on a single barrel, while the four-barrel Sprint version of the same block raised output to 215 hp at 5,200 rpm. The 326-cubic-inch V-8 came in two-barrel form at 250 hp and in HO four-barrel form at 285 hp, and the top-line 400-cubic-inch V-8 with its Rochester Quadrajet four-barrel made 325 hp at 4,800 rpm and 410 lb-ft, a figure repeated for the Ram Air version of the same 400 that added functional hood scoops and moved its power peak to 5,200 rpm.5,3,1

Car and Driver's test car, a Firebird 400 convertible, paired the 400 V-8 with a close-ratio Muncie four-speed manual carrying a 2.20 low gear and a 3.90 rear axle; the same 400 was also offered with a three-speed Turbo Hydra-Matic automatic. The record's specifications carry a 108.1-inch wheelbase across all bodies, an overall length of 188.8 inches as printed for the test car, a base-six hardtop shipping weight of 2,955 lb against 3,247 lb for the convertible, and an 18.5-US-gallon fuel tank; the test car itself, fully equipped, weighed 3,598 lb with a 57.0/43.0 front-to-rear weight split.1,2

On the strip, Car and Driver's Firebird 400 convertible ran 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds and covered the standing quarter mile in 14.4 seconds at 100 mph, with four recorded runs spanning 5.7 to 6.1 seconds at a chilly 29-degree test-day temperature; the same car needed 299 ft to stop from 80 mph on its drum brakes and was estimated by the magazine at 114 mph flat out in fourth gear at 6,000 rpm. Buyers choosing among those five drivetrains could also pick from fifteen exterior colors Pontiac listed for the year, from Starlight Black and Cameo Ivory through Regimental Red and Champagne.1,5

Coverage: Partial — researched sections are shown; missing ones are not yet sourced. Researched through 2026-09-22.

Every figure is labeled with how sure we are. Reported means a manufacturer, registry, or reference figure we cite but have not reconciled against factory records ourselves. Disputed means credible sources disagree and both are shown. Rows are separately scoped; don't add them together unless the note says they make up a total.

Hardtop and convertible rows partition the 82,560 total in the Over-Drive Magazine table.

The eight engine/trim/transmission rows come from one uncited site; they sum exactly to 82,560, consistent with Over-Drive Magazine's statement that Pontiac recorded production by six/V-8 and standard/deluxe rather than by option package. They are kept as reported, single-source rows.

No counts by engine package (Sprint, 326 HO, 400, Ram Air), paint, or trim were found.
